Serit continues seething at the lazy goblins, quite a hypocritical action from the Bugbear to be sure. He survives on the fear he brings to others and this lot is even past that.
"Speak clearly and quickly. What are your troubles and what are these 'things' that your whelps are so afraid of and believe could conquer a bear."
The older goblin appears clearly moved by Jardor's words, and nods back in appreciation.
The goblins who given the meat seem almost willing to throw themselves at the food immediately, but stop when the old goblin's staff stomps the ground with soft "thud".
"Don't be animals. In any situation", he says, and points the goblins to one of the ruined houses near the contral plaza. The goblins bow and run off there. They pull out a flat and and relatively thin rock and set it on some smaller rocks. One goblin brings some flammable junk and starts a small fire under the flat rock, while another brings back a well polished butcher's knife and starts cutting the meat into thin slices. A third goblin waits for the stone to start crakling under the heat from the fire, and throws the meat slices on it. Other goblins form a line to each receive their small portion.
Meanwhile, the old goblin turns back and talks to the party.
"Thank you. This will not save us, but at the very least it will keep them going for longer. I am Biol-Kezz, the elder in this village. Though you haven't really explained who this "Old Bear" is, and I have no idea how this stranger knows of our situation, we are grateful for the help. But right now, you may be the ones who will need help. If you are caught in the open at nightfall, you will certainly die. We will hide in the basement of the tower for the night, it's behind solid rock, so we should be safe. You may have your talk wherever you like, including the tower. Just don't disturm the small shrine near the tower."
he turns to Nasaar,
"The smaller villages are abandonned, those who survived are here or the larger village to the east. They might be slightly safer in there, but with more mouths, their food situation must be as bas if not worse than ours."
the then responds to the bugbear with a short response.
"Bonecrusher scavengers. A pack large enough to eat everyone in this village and still be hungry".
(Whoever has a nature/wildlands/animals based background can take a Nature check to work out what these beasts are)
The bonecrusher scavenger, also called northern hyena, is a medium dog-like scavenger that is known for its ability to eat almost anything even remotely resembling food. While true predators like tigers or wolves will go after the meat on a fresh kill, and not try to pick the last morsels of meat off the bones, the scavengers who would inevitably find upon the dead animal will be thorough. They will eat the meat off the bones, whether fresh or rotten, the giblets, lick the ground if possible to scoop of the bloody dirt. Finally (which is where get their name), the scavengers will use the well built jaws to crack the bones to feast on the marrow. Given enough scavengers, any carcass will be rapidly reduced to to a few broken hollowed out bones.
The demeanour of the scavenger changes depending on their numbers. A single one can be scared off by a commoner, while a pack of a dozen will agressively try to steal a fresh kill from a tiger or even a larger beast. Sometimes, they form into massive packs numbering in the scores (or even a hundred), and then they suddenly become the apex predator of an area, consuming everything in their path.
Sometimes, for reasons not lnown to you, a larger subspecies of the scavenger is born in the pack.
"How large is the pack?" Nasaar asks, his face going a bit white as he realizes what they are talking about. "If large enough, then no wonder you are having troubles surviving out here." He glances to the others and gives them the basic description of the creatures and their packs. "My guess is we are talking about a pack of the largest size, and there may be abnormally larger bonecrushers leading them." He shakes his head and looks anew at the poor excuse for defenses.
"Believe it or not, this is actually good news. Since they are scavengers by nature it will likely be much easier to cow and disperse the pack once a few of their alphas have been dealt with as a show of force. Scavenger beasts aren't normally ones to lay claim to territory and defend it to their dying number like other apex predators."
Jardor looks around him, surveying the sad state of the palisade wall.
"Of course, the job would be made easier if you village was more defensible. But if that were the case I guess you wouldn't have needed Old Bear to send us, huh?
Well it will be nightfall soon, so we should see to the immediate need of surviving the night. After that we can make a strategy for what to do when they come again. Do the scavengers visit your community every night, or are they on any kind of rough schedule, once every few days or some such?"
Jardor begins walking towards the tower as he speaks with Biol-Kezz, taking him at his word that lodging in the tower is an option for the evening.
"What is the state of the inside of your tower? Is there a place we can rest higher up that will also give us a vantage point on the pack as they arrive? It would help us know what kind of force we are up against."

" I think a good strategy may be to pep up as many Goblins as we can, equip them with weapons, like slings and bows then lure the scavengers here and ambush them. I would say two days or three days to set it up and then one glorious battle."
"Hmm, I still wish I knew who this Old Bear is. How did he even know we were in trouble? There were no visitors lately. I suppose he didn't give you a message of any kind?"
Biol-Kezz tells you as you approach the tower.
"The scavengers have been trying to get into the basement every night. Each time more tenaciously than the last."
"The tower ground floor is sturdy. The basement door, to where we have been hiding is still strong, though these beast have been clawing and chewing at it. If they break through, it's all over for us. The ground floor has the front door and a pair of narrow windows, all boarded up as best we can. Some beasts make it inside and try to reach us in the basement, but most of the pack is kept out. The second floor walls are less stable, and there several of the logs are rotten. It would hive a high point to observe from, but the scavengers could make their way in in several places without much difficulty, so we normally keep the hatch closed. The third floor is quite high and difficult to reach, and not stable at all. While the beasts would have a hard time reaching it, so would you, and the floor could give way under the weight. "
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"The figurine, who has that little thing the man gave us? He gave us two bags, one for after they are surviving and the other with the glowing writing has that little bear thing," Serit says as he remembers the two bags they were given.
"So, these beasts come every night. It seems like the door to the tower makes a natural pinch point for their entry if we use it wisely. I also would not mind checking out this heap to see if there is anything I can use to make some quick traps. One goblins junk is another goblins treasure," he says as he meanders to the junk heap taking a quick look over it before turning back to hear the rest of the ideas

At the tower Nasaar takes some time to look over the building and to see if there is any way to make it more defensible. (What do you want for a check here? He has prof with carpenter's tools, as well as Smith's tools. Looking for something quick and dirty he can just do right away to help them through the next few days, then to work on bigger repairs after that. Also he has the mending if that is able to help out here at all...)

I cannot see Smith's tools or proficiency in them anywhere on your character sheet or in the OOC thread.
With Carpenter's tools and proficiency, you can start by rolling perception to find areas to fix first. You cannot use guidance, but you do have advantage.
You find a large number of areas you can reinforce: the boarded up windows, the front door, the damaged door to the basement, and even a suspicous area uf the floor and lower wall in a corner.
Good materials are hard to find a such a short notice, but you nevertheless do what you can in reinforcing the areas you have found. The enemies trying to force their way through the fortified areas will find it more difficult (DC increased by 5).
Also, you manage to leave small slits for weapons in the door and windows. Though not ideal (-3 to ranged attack rolls, -2 to melee attack rolls), they can be used to try to attack enemies on the other side.
"Well, I've done what I can for tonight." Nasaar informs the others as he finishes working on several areas around the tower. "We should be able to attack the creatures, with a bit of lack of accuracy, now, and they will find it more difficult to get through some of the more problematic areas I shored up." He seems rather pleased with his efforts as he wipes rotted wood and sawdust from his clothes. "Anyone else have any ideas of how to add anything for tonight?"
