The woman looks away from her work as the dragonborn speaks to her. "We'll be leaving soon. I suggest grabbing plenty of food in the meantime, and enjoy being on land while you can. We'll be on the water for a few days. Just make sure it's not something that goes bad quickly. The smell of rotting food sticks around for longer than you'd like."

That was good advice! Perhaps a quick venture to the buildings nearby then. There might be a baker or a cheesmaker, or maybe a charcutier. Glad to have elicited some conversation, Chen responds, rubbing his belly: Excellent, and my thanks. Another few moments ashore then. Would you like me to pick you up something?

Jahren smirks as he is widely ignored in the curious little shop. Muttering a word to himself in Sylvan, the half-elf casts Detect Magic to see if there's anything of true interest around. He moves about the shop a bit, less interested in the random assortment of items than in expanding his detection area a bit while moving about.
Loane pauses a brief moment in consideration. Something outside of the basic supplies would be a change of pace. She takes out two gold pieces, and tosses it to Chen. "Sure. Whatever you find that looks good. You seem to have an eye for food."

As Jahren moves about the shop he notices the faint glimmer of magic on a number of items against the wall on shelves behind the shop keeper. The magic is faint. She glances up, noticing you noticing the items behind her. The glances up and down at your clothing and equipment, bluntly appraising you. With a heavy sigh and some smacking of her lips to get her mouth ready to work, she places the book down on the counter in front of her, with all the heaviness of the inconvenience you are placing her in, taking away from her precious reading time. With less of a question, and more of a statement she says, "What can I help you with?"
You notice 5 things that are magical hanging from the back wall. Also, there is a large chest underneath a desk in the main part of the store that also appears to be magical. The items hanging from the back include a small crystal wrapped to a leather necklace with twine, a corroded silver bracelet, a platinum ring dull with dust, a small leather pouch with some magic within, and a round wooden flask with a wooden stopper.

"Greetings, I was wondering what types of 'very special' items you might have, perhaps something of the enchanted variety?" Jahren pulls out a small pouch of gold and tosses it up and down a bit, hoping the woman will be a bit more cooperative if properly motivated.
Jahren quickly realizes he's taken a wrong turn with this particularly lady when a furrow crawls onto her face. But, she likewise realizes it's her livelihood to sell things, even if it's to half-elves in fancy clothes that look full of themselves and figure they can just toss their money around and get whatever they want....
She reaches behind her and pulls a necklace off of the wall, "This one here is enchanted it is. The necklace can be used to make you move faster. Each day you can use it once, and it only works a short time. I'd accept 200 gold for it."
She pulls down the platinum ring, placing it on the table, "The ring is a magical ring for sure. Whomever wears it can better read the body language and faces of those around them. This one goes for 250 gold."
She points at the chest under the table, "That chest there. Whatever you fill it with, when you go to lift it, it only weighs half of whatever it should. Great for moving and traders. That one is 500 gold."
"That pouch there contains some magical sling stones. Five of 'em for 25 gold each. That wooden stopper there contains a potion of water breathing. 180 gold for that. And that bracelet there makes the wearers ears appear human, no matter what sorta ears they got. That's 350."
Done showing you the enchanted gear, she sits back with a sour look on her face.
Jahren begins quietly muttering incantations and weaving simple magic about himself. The woman rolls her eyes at him at waits. A moment later he touches the platinum ring.
(OOC: Uncommon magic item : +1 to insight, requires attunement. The ring alters its appearance in small ways at random, the wearer has no control over it. )
He continues casting and eventually touches the bracelet.
(OOC: Uncommon magic item : wearer appears to have human ears (illusion). The wearer can stop the illusion by removing the bracelet. (does not require attunement). It vibrates just perceptible to the wearer in the presence of humans. )
When he's done, the woman raises her eyebrow at him, waiting not so patiently. "Well...are ya interested?"
Chen had explored the Calimshan deserts, wandered the Chondathan coastal plains, crossed the mountains of Turmish and sailed the Sea of Fallen Stars, and had had some interesting adventures along the way, not to mention some interesting meals. But here before him was the fringes of the fabled forests of Cormanthor, a land he had always longed to explore. Sailing up the Lim river he had spent time on deck staring out into the green, imagining what wonders lay hidden beneath the tranquil foliage. If there was anything that could draw his attention away from his next meal, it was the beauties of the wilderness, and he longed to enter those woods more than anywhere else.
Sighing, he gathered his things and returned once more to the ship. The quick second trip had netted him two loaves of fresh crusty bread, a soft goat cheese, some pickled olives, and an assortment of nuts and berries. Ascending the gangway, he looked around again for the curious deckhand, ready to present her with a small wrapped gift of tasty provender.

The woman shrugs as if disinterested in the proposal, "I suppose I could let it go for 340...but...for any half-elf such as yerself headed into Hillsfar, it's worth every coin..."
--------
Loane looks at the choppy water of the Moonsea. It's going to be a bit of a rough ride on the waters today. The grey sky stretches from horizon to horizon and a cold wind blows from the north east. She looks up where Trutrue is letting sails down on the top mast....too much by far for the weather. "TRUTRU YOU HALF-WIT, TOO MUCH SAIL! TRIM IT BACK BY HALF! WHAT KIND OF SAILOR ARE YOU?" Trutru immediately looks down, aghast, and begins trimming up the sails. Looking up at the glow in the sky, she sees it's almost noon. Time to get out of here.

Jahren drops down 340g worth of coin and says "pleasure doing business with you!" Departing with his new trinket and knowing he could easily lose a day if he doesn't get to the docks soon and see if the Mad Barnacle or another ship is still there he heads towards the waterfront. Along the way he swiftly deposits some coin with a vendor or two and picks up an abundance of fine cheese, fruit, bread and a wine if he can find it. Arriving at the dock he heads for the Barnacle and calls up "still have room for another?"
The woman holds up her hand as Jahren completes the deal, and takes the gold out of the bag. Painstakingly, she begins counting. She gets to 340 a couple minutes later. A few pieces she has set aside. She tests the pieces carefully she's set to one side. Then she carefully stacks them upon a plate of a scale and measures the weight. After careful measurement she finally holds tightly onto a rabbits foot on her belt and focus' for a moment, before glancing through the piles. That done she nods to Jahren, "The deal is done."
Jahren, a smirk on his face, wanders out of the small towns curiosities shop and heads back towards the dock, stopping for his food and drink along the way, and the waiting Mad Barnacle where he secures a small cabin near the rear of the ship for the trip to Hillsfar. As he moves up the gangplank and glances around, he notices that rotund golden dragon-kin seems to be in conversation with the woman he'd previously noted. He hands her what looks like a cloth wrapped block of cheese with a satisfied smile.
A human woman near the back turns, her hat showing the captains plume, and strides confidently towards the mid ship, leaning over the railing to look down on the docks. "First mate Halister, are we prepared to disembark?" The first mate, still sorting coin from Jahren looks up, "Uhh...yes...sure I am sure we are ma'am." She turns her back on him, rolling her eyes and looks to the woman talking to the golden dragon kin, "Loane? The first mate is sure we're ready to depart. Feeling good?"
Loane glances about the ship noting several things that aren't ready then nods smartly, "We will be in three minutes ma'am!" Looking for a place to place her chunk of cheese she places it back in Chen's arms, "Hold this for me." There are several mintues of frantic action aboard the ship as the crew move with a snap in their feet, obeying the orders, or rather, the helpful suggestions from Loane, while the first mate manages to have a sailor unrope the ship and get the gangplank pulled up. With a snap of the sails and some firm pole work against the docks, the ship slowly drifts its way from Elmwood's docks, already wavering back and forth slowly on the choppy Moonsea waters. Jahren and Chen find themselves herded to a quiet place on the deck near each other in order to get out of the way of the crew.
The crew is quite busy for the next several minutes while the ship gets underway, but as soon as she's in deeper water and catching the right wind to drive them west, things slow down, the captain takes over barking orders shouting at Loane, "Take a break sailor! Good job getting us out of port."
And just like that, the journey from Elmwood to Hillsfar is underway, a two and a half day journey along the northern edge of Cormanthor.

Loane hurries about the ship as they set out from the docks. She pulls her own weight, making sure everything was secured, and aiding out some of the less than helpful sailors who were slacking at their duties. It is far from the smooth working crew of some of the larger ships she was on while traveling along the Sword's Coast. Though this small ship is far from the galleons overall. When the Captain orders her to take a break, she responds with a quick, "Yes, Captain!"
There are not many spots on the deck out of the crew's way. With so many moving pieces needing to be tended to, it was not much of a surprise. She ends up near the half-elf and dragonborn passengers, and gives them each a nod before leaning against the railing. She wipes at her forehead with a rag, taking full use of her break to relax.

I've never been. I'm a traveler of sorts, always looking to explore new places and meet interesting people, and recording what I find." He taps on a small pouch at his side that holds a notebook. "What brings you to these parts?"

Chen gratefully accepts some of the nuts and fruit from Jahren, and answers between (and during) mouthfuls: I too am a traveler, though less for curiosity and more out of a quest for enlightenment. I find the more I explore other lands the more I discover about myself. I long to see the forests of Cormanthor, but they have a reputation of great danger. In Hillsfar I hope to find some willing to venture therein.
Chen is attired in a tight-fitting robe and sandals with little adornment save for a large pouch on his belt, a ring on each hand and a small crudely-carved figure of a bear hanging from a leather cord around his neck.
"A pleasure, Loane. You seem quite skilled at your profession here. May I wager a guess that you are a newer member of this particular crew? Please do not take offense to the question, but rather it seems this crew would have little choice but to rise to your level given many more days at sea."
"You are a wiser and braver soul than I, mighty Chen. Although I would be quite curious to see the great history of Cormanthor, even in its current state, I am a poor adventurer at best, and certainly no hero of any kind. Perhaps if I see you in these parts after your adventure, you will allow me to learn from and record your deeds. You do not seek any particular treasure within beyond the most priceless treasure of enlightenment?"
Well, now that you mention it, I must confess I do enjoy exotic foods as much as exotic lands, and the two often are found together. A novel discovery of the culinary sort is a thing to be treasured too, do you not agree? What of yourself? What experiences do you value above others when choosing what to record?
Judging from Loane's last comment, Chen wonders whether she is not a local to this area: You are not from these parts then? How long have you been sailing the Moonsea?
Chen speaks at a rather higher pitch than you might expect from such a large member of his race.
