We fled the wars, the famines, the Plague; we fled from the Church and it's crusades, from broken fiefs and robber-kings. We fled in search of a better life.
Alycron was an enigma; a previously undiscovered continent past the Seas, promising a new beginning for our lost souls. A land of green pastures, flowing rivers, rich soil, with wealth hidden in the mountains, ripe for the taking. In an act of foolish naivety, we embarked on ships for this new land.
Most stayed near the shore and began construction on the town of Trishdale, a beacon of our efforts. However, I had went on an expedition to explore the surrounding lands, to bring light to the rumors of riches in the area. What we found was a realm of death and madness! We were not the first to step foot on this ancient soil, and among the ruins of an antediluvian civilization, we encountered hideous abominations and transcendent terrors. I alone fled back to Trishdale in a maddened state, bequeathed with the knowledge of our folly.
Why have you come here? Do you seek fame and glory, or do you pursue the unmeasurable treasure buried in dark catacombs? The only thing Alycron will promise you is your demise."
-The First Explorer
Hello all! Along with @spiderwrangler and @JumpierPoet, we are glad to present Alycron: a Cosmic Horror West Marches. This is a horror campaign focused on exploration, centered around the town of Trishdale. For those unfamiliar with the concept of a West Marches, be sure to check out the original thread.
In a West Marches, it is the job of the players to form a party. So, we will be accepting all players- if you make a complete application, you will be invited into the campaign! Then, it's up to you to gather a party and embark on an adventure. To play up the cosmic horror aspect, we will be using these homebrew rules.
Here are the rules for character creation:
Ability Scores- Point Buy or Standard Array, or roll 4d6 drop one. If you choose to roll stats here, do it here and you must keep them.
Race- All official races. Keep in mind that DMs may have to review your character if you wish to play a more exotic race.
Class- All official published classes, including Critical Role content and Artificer.
Level- All characters begin at level 3
Alignment- All alignments are allowed. However, keep in mind that if you are playing an evil aligned character, you will somehow have to convince other characters to join you when you form your party.
XP/HP- We will be using XP and fixed hitpoints.
Equipment- You will start with anything from your background, and any armor, weapons or tools from your standard class equipment. In lieu of a starting pack, you will have a backpack containing a bedroll, messkit, tinderbox and waterskin, 3 slots of rations, 3 Adventuring Gear slots (see rules above).
Backstory- Include who your character is, and why they came to Trishdale. To play up the horror vibe, it may be a good idea to include some fears and flaws.
Please include a link to your character sheet. Once your character is approved, you will be invited into our OOC PM. A Town Thread will be coming soon, and hopefully we can begin running some adventures. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Cheers!

Name: Cedar Tiernay
Race- Half elf
Class- Barbarian (totem warrior) but dex based!
Alignment- CG
Backstory: Life was simple for Cedar. Not easy by any stretch of the imagination, but simple. He was born on a small farmstead in *Insert name of other country here*. His father, although old, had no problem tending his fields, so Cedar went to the nearest city of Ceria and apprenticed himself to a trapper. Even as a boy, he was a natural, but by the time he was 18, he was the best hunter that the county had ever seen. It was as he became a man that he met Rhy. As the daughter of the baron she was not allowed outside the city much, so their paths had not crossed before, but as he was helping gather food for the winter feast, he found that she had snuck out to help with the preparations as well. They quickly fell in love, and although they knew their stations would never allow them to be married, they were happy. She taught him to read and write, and he taught her how to hunt and defend herself. Their lives would have been perfect if not for the plague. It struck the whole kingdom, soon after the spring planting, killing all the crops, and poisoning the wells. Animals fled as their food sources started to disappear. Soon most people in the city were starving. The baron had stashed up all the remaining food in a tall grain tower, and was refusing to hand it out to the people in the town, despite Rhy's pleading. Luckily, the plague ended as suddenly as it started at the start of summertime, but it had taken its toll- the seeds of despair and mistrust had been sown, their roots dug deep and their flowers were just starting to blossom... The second catastrophe came that autumn. The bank had invested in a large business in the capitol that had gone bankrupt. Soon all trade with the outside world ceased, as the council tried to sort out their crisis. The third catastrophe was not so considerate as the second, striking before they had a chance to re-coup their losses. People started dropping dead, with no wounds or sickness that could be found. It showed no sign of stopping, the body count piling up until the graveyards were overflowing. Rhy was one of them. Cedar, stricken, was left with their five month old child that they had kept a secret to try and help the city. The fourth and final catastrophe was the reckoning. An army from the neighbouring country invaded, and in their weakened state, they were in no state to resist. Cedar helped in the siege on the city, but it was no use. He could do nothing but watch as everything he loved was destroyed. He tried to flee the city with his child, but in the panic, he was attacked and knocked out by one of the city guards. When he awoke, there was nothing left but ashes. His child was gone, and the army had moved on, leaving none alive. None but him. he thought about staying, trying to rebuild, but there was nothing left. Not for him. He wandered for a while, helping those who were harmed by the invasion, but soon he grew weary of seeing the carnage. He decided to follow a rumour that he had heard years ago, of a land of miracles and new promises. It was said that those with ambition or need could carve out a life there. He had neither, but maybe he could start again.....

Ability scores: 1371517177
Name: Trinjya Lazgural
Race: Tiefling (Devil's Tongue)
Class: Bard
Alignement: Chaotic neutral
Backstory:
Trinjya was the daughter of a traveling merchant, back on the old continent. But luck never was on her side, or on anyone's side as far as her family was concerned. When she was ten years old, their convoy was attacked by bandits and most of the travelers and merchants were slaughtered. She and a few others were abducted and brought to the bandit’s camp in a nearby mountain range. For years, they made her work, work until her arms ached and hands bled. As she got older, she noticed that the bandits started to behave differently around her and that she learned how to use that to get what she wanted. She also learned how to fight, how to make it painful to get to close to her. Only a few years after she was captured, she joined the bandits on raids, for the hatred an guilt caused by the loss of her family made her heart grow cold and hard. And as she learned more about the arcane talents she was able to wield, her influence among the bandits was ever growing. She took over the gang when she was 21 years old, but wealth and power could not warm her broken heart and the finest food turned to ash in her mouth. One day, she led an attack on a small convoy of merchants and stumbled over a little girl that was hiding behind one of the carts while her men were stabbing her family and as she looked into the wide eyes of the frightened child, something inside her snapped. It felt like her heart was exploding and she blacked out for a second. And then she ran. She didn't think, she didn’t look back, she just fled, she fled as far as she could, she fled to Alycron, toTrishdale, to hide from the terrors of what had happened to her and from what she had become.
The feeling of loss is strong in Trinjya and she seeks to fill the void with in her with valuables. If she wants something, she gets it.
She is very uncomfortable around kids and can't look them in the eye. However, what she fears most, ever since her father pushed her into a coffer where she hid and had to listened to her family being killed, is to be trapped in a small dark place with no way to escape.

Name: Lucian Pennyworth Race: Variant Human Class: Sorcerer-Draconic 2/Wizard 1 Alignment: Chaotic Good Background: Urchin Backstory: Lucian spent his youth on the streets, begging and stealing what he needed to survive. His father, a drunk, and his mother prostitute were little more than roommates and it was their influence that first started Lucian down the path of thievery. Lucian was 15 when fate, the gods, or just damn luck intervened and his magical abilities surfaced. After getting over the initial shock Lucian knew his life had just changed. He struck upon a plan and left home to fulfill a dream.
It took a couple of years but Lucian was able to get enough money and make the right friendships to get him into the College of Magic. Once there Lucian threw himself into his studies and after 7 years he graduated as a full-fledged Wizard. A bit of nostalgia came over Lucian and he decided to return home. This would be his worst mistake.
Lucian arrived in the city only to have the gates close behind him and the alarm goes out, a massive army was approaching. Trapped inside, Lucian did his best to find out what was going on but it took 2 days before he realized the city was under siege. Like most of the inhabitants, Lucian did his part to fight off the invaders only to have them setup camp out of range of the city's defenses. 2 weeks passed and food began to be scarce. 3 weeks and the rats and other sewer dwellers started to come up and attack the population. A month into the siege and disease began to take hold within the city walls. Lucian did his part to aid those in need but it quickly went beyond his skill or power to do anything. A plan was hatched in desperation and as the city's militia attacked, its surviving citizens fled to the surrounding hills and forests.
Few made it. Lucian was able to help his group survive and make it to a port city. The enemy forces were close behind. Lucian was able to gain passage for himself and a few others to Trishdale but it cost him most of his fortune. Lucian has been in Trishdale for a few months and it's not what he had hoped for. Again he is faced with poverty and homelessness. There are rumors and stories of the ruins and their promise of riches for those brave or desperate enough to venture in. Lucian hopes he can either join a group or form a band of ruin raiders and make it worth his while.
Backstory: Alex was just a simple cartographer working in her home village of Sapherus. She loved her job, and that little cartography shop she worked in, never wanting any other life than the one surrounded by maps. Whenever she had time, she went out of town to sketch the landscapes found, a favorite hobby of hers. The beauty of nature was what brought her the most joy, and a scenic view was absolutely incredible. While her life was perfect, she felt something was missing, so she went to the local blacksmith for help. He told her a basic training of combat was what she needed. She believed him, and he became her mentor. When her shift ended, it was off to the blacksmith to begin training. While at first she was terrible, but the more they trained, the... less terrible she got. Upon readiness, she decided to leave her village to pursue a new adventure. Eventually on her journey as an adventurer, she stumbled upon Trishdale, unaware of what terrors surround the town.
Growing up, Megoddosh always dreamed of adventuring beyond his safe little tribe. One day, when he had grown up, he was on a hunting trip when his tribe was attacked by a group of daring gargoyles. They left no one they could find alive. Megoddosh was the only survivor. This twist of fate made him numb to death, causing him to seek out a blood hunter to teach him the ways of hemocraft, so he could keep others from having their friends and family taken away from them. He feels no compassion for the dead; they're the lucky ones. Eventually, he made his way to Alycron so he could grow stronger.

Name: Nolla Black. Race: Variant Human Class: Starting as Rogue Background: Entertainer. Backstory:
Nolla is a jack-of-all-trades, who travels from here to there, always wishing to see new things. She traveled to Alycron to see this new place and be one of the first to explore it. She has a pention for learning secrets, and learning all she can about those secrets once she finds out about them. She loves knowledge above most anything else, and will do almost anything to gain more of it.
Name: Cade Goodbarrel Race: Stout Halfling Class: Gunslinger Fighter Background: Sage Backstory: Cade had always been inquisitive even by halfling standards. Exposed to firearms at a young age by a chance encounter with an eccentric gnome, the halfing was enamored by them. Pestering the gnome, a one Professor Barret Oliander Ambrose Soliqy Tummus or Prof. Boast for short, Cade managed to get the professor to take him on as an apprentice.
Together Cade and Prof. Boast spent many decades travelling the continent researching and putting their ideas and theories to test, often with the help of more progressive dwarves. Unfortunately their travels together were put to a premature end when the professor contracted a debilitating disease which left him bedridden for many months. Though Prof. Boast eventually recovered, it seemed that his days of traveling had come to an end at least for now.
Taking up the banner to continue what they had started, Cade struck out on his own. While he continued to pour time and effort into the research and improvement of firearms, the halfling felt that meaningful progress could only be made with field tests. And who better to conduct these practical tests than Cade himself.
Currently Cade finds himself in Trishdale, having escorted a merchant caravan here as part of his field tests.
Fears 1. Cade is claustrophobic. As a child, he accidentally locked himself in a small storage room and wasn't found for days. 2. He also has mild arachnophobia stemming from the same incident above.

I"m REALLY excited for this. I didn't plan my character till I rolled, (I usually go rogue or druid), so playing a Barbarian will be a welcome and exciting change!!!
Backstory: Norwood travelled from the far off wastes, hunting the monstrosities that destroyed his home village and slaughtered his family. His insatiable thirst to destroy the horrors that ruined his world have led him to Alycron and to Trishdale... although the whiskey and ale might be another reason. It's usually the only thing able to quench the echoes of screams from long ago that haunt him nightly.
Ability Scores- Standard Array: 10, 12, 8, 13, 14, 15
Name- Cnicus Dustseeker
Race- Deep Gnome
Class- Bard (College of Lore) /Rogue [The Rogue multiclass is only due to backstory]
Alignment- Chaotic Good
Backstory- Born to an underground family of miners, as it is common with the Svirfneblin, Cnicus started showing some... issues from a very young age. He saw things that weren't there, spoke words that no one could understand. His parents thought than an spirit, an aberration or something along those lines could be the problem, so they started an investigation. The answer was... Nothing. There no magic or any sign whatsoever that any entity was messing with him. The things that Cnicus saw were entirely inside his own head.
As he grew up, he started pretending his hallucinations were a thing of the past, despite still suffering from them every now and then, and learned to tolerate them by ignoring them completely. He escaped to the surface as soon as he had the chance to do so, not only because he suspected some lingering influence of the Underdark over his mind was the origin of his mental problems, but because he didn't wanted to spend his life in shadows as yet another miner.
Once in the surface, he decided exactly what he wanted to dedicate his life to: He would become a Bard, the kind of bard who travels the world learning stories and making sure those stories aren't forgotten by immortalizing them in song and poetry. With that goal in mind, he started from the ground up: He was completely penniless, so he became a rogue under a fake name and disguise for a short while, making sure to not steal from anyone who didn't deserved it at least a little, until he had enough money to learn and perfect his craft. From thieving street urchin, to more or less respected musician, the gnome started using his constant nightmares and weird visions as inspiration for his art, writing music and lyrics that were more than a little surrealistic.
Hungry for not only fame and glory, but also for knowledge, Cnicus Dustseeker travelled to Trishdale, hoping to find more inspiration for his music in the town's mysteries, not knowing what he would find there...
Alignment: Lawful Evil (emphasis on Lawful over Evil)
Backstory: "Some say you can never go home again. This is doubly true for those whose lives, like mine, have taken a different route... but where to begin? With the untimely transformation that left my body weak and damaged? Or perhaps with the demise of the man now called a saint? No, perhaps not that story today. Let us say only that I, Horatio Harkon, have come to Trishdale, at the behest of a unique benefactor, to acquire certain artifacts of power and significance. I can't say yet what they are in specific detail, but I trust that I shall know them when they are found. I fear, if you must know, only the consequences of my mission. The price of failure, in my case, is an unpleasantly indeterminate stay amongst the horrors below. The price of success, however, might yet be even worse...
Equipment - Still need to get that up on the sheet (need to log for the night will edit) Spells - Still need to get that up on the sheet (need to log for the night will edit)
Backstory - Born of divinity, scooped up by the crown to be made their pet. Groomed for espionage and disciplined for war. Twisted by the shadows and corrupted by the darkness.
"This fear has me chilled down to the bone And I have been haunted by these things I still have left to say I’m weary of fighting this alone So tired of holding on to strings much better left to fray
And I said Hear me now here and now I’m calling Memories wear me down And this seems so complicated When all I want is just the truth
I’m wilted and faded after all Too strung out and burnt out to be half the one that I could be I’ll never belong inside your world So black out the sun and leave me to play out the same old tragedy'
Who am I? Exelda LeBlanc. What am I? A survivor. No different than any one else. Who are my parents? Good question. I imagine a handsome fellow 'bout yea tall and a fair skinned maiden with hair much like myself. Reality is, they aren't the ones who raised me. The Crown raised me. They, groomed me. Nurtured my skills. I was disciplined. Obedient and above all else, faithful to my Lead Hand. What happened? War. Madness. Endless suffering, not for the faint of heart. I began losing pieces of myself that day… What now? I fight fire with fire."
Khaldon Ellervohn - Triton - Barbarian/Path of the Storm Herald.
Khaldon once lived among his people in the city of [insert city name here] deep in the depths of the ocean, located on the sea floor. Proud of his heritage, as soon as Khaldon grew to maturity, he wanted to serve and protect his people by enlisting in its military. Sworn to protect any and all threats to his city, domestic or foreign, Khaldon quickly felt at home in military ranks. The comradely and respect of rank, the feeling that he was doing something that mattered, and just the chance to find glory on the battlefield. For two years, Khaldon lived his ideal life in the military, convinced, naively, that the rest of his life would be this simple and filled with glory.
Then, the day came. Warlocks under the patronage of a Great Old One patron attacked Khaldon's home city, and attempted to summon their master in the heart of the city, to wreak havoc, to claim it and its people as his. The military at full strength fought valiantly to stop these marauders and bring them to justice. Far outranking their enemies, for some time it seemed inevitable that the Triton military had won the day. But when the summon was successful, and the master of the Warlocks made his appearance, the tide turned. The summon was only partially successful however, and the evil deity was only present at a fraction of his full power. Still, it was enough to level entire districts of the underwater metropolis, kill thousands of innocent civilians, and slay many of Khaldon's comrades.
A last ditch effort was made. A suicide mission. What remained of Khaldon's unit and one other, traveled to the heart of the city, where its new alpha predator occupant resided, to reverse the summon, and banish the Old One. It was a massacre. Khaldon, and two others remained. His friend, who served alongside Khaldon in his unit, and the commanding officer of the other unit they had teamed up with. Enraged at the loss of his friends and people, Khaldon attempted to strike. He, in turn, was swiftly struck down, swatted aside by the dark deity with ease. When he awoke, it was all over. He, and one other remained. His friend. The third, the commanding officer, was gone. He had sacrificed himself, in one final, desperate effort to reverse the summon. But,
it was successful. The commanding officer had succeeded in banishing the otherworldly invader, disappearing with the foul otherworldly monstrosity in the process. The crisis was over. But the turmoil and heart-ache was only beginning. Finding out what family had perished, what friends had perished, what comrades from other units were gone. Looking around, seeing the rubble that entire districts had been reduced to. Searching for survivors among the chaos, and finding only the dead. Khaldon was full of rage. Pure white hot rage. After completing what Khaldon thought was the necessary obligations to his city, helping in orchestrating the initial plan for a rebuild, completing all searches for potential survivors, and attending the many, many funerals of those who he held dear, Khaldon immediately made plans to leave for the surface world. Those who he still had in his life pleaded with him not to go. He was needed here, and they did not want to lose him as well. But he would not listen. He would travel the land, and seek out those Warlocks who had made a pact with the very Lurker who destroyed his home. Khaldon swore, on the day that he made for the surface world, that they would all meet there end, by his hand.
Khaldon does not like Warlocks in general, and finds trusting them difficult. He hates those affiliated with the Great Old One patrons, and will not hesitate to attack and kill a Warlock of this pact. His travels, his quest for warlock blood, has taken him to Trishdale, running from his duties back home, with blind rage his motivator.

Fears
1. Cade is claustrophobic. As a child, he accidentally locked himself in a small storage room and wasn't found for days.
2. He also has mild arachnophobia stemming from the same incident above.

Class: Barbarian
Alignment: Chaotic Good
https://ddb.ac/characters/36443520/jgOKsF
Backstory: Norwood travelled from the far off wastes, hunting the monstrosities that destroyed his home village and slaughtered his family. His insatiable thirst to destroy the horrors that ruined his world have led him to Alycron and to Trishdale... although the whiskey and ale might be another reason. It's usually the only thing able to quench the echoes of screams from long ago that haunt him nightly.
more or lessrespected musician, the gnome started using his constant nightmares and weird visions as inspiration for his art, writing music and lyrics that were more than a little surrealistic.Active Campaigns:

Name: Horatio Harkon
Race: Tiefling
Class: Warlock (Tome of the Chain)

"This fear has me chilled down to the bone
And I have been haunted by these things I still have left to say
I’m weary of fighting this alone
So tired of holding on to strings much better left to fray
And I said
Hear me now
here and now I’m calling
Memories wear me down
And this seems so complicated
When all I want is just the truth
I’m wilted and faded after all
Too strung out and burnt out to be half the one that I could be
I’ll never belong inside your world
So black out the sun and leave me to play out the same old tragedy'
Who am I? Exelda LeBlanc.
What am I? A survivor. No different than any one else.
Who are my parents? Good question. I imagine a handsome fellow 'bout yea tall and a fair skinned maiden with hair much like myself. Reality is, they aren't the ones who raised me. The Crown raised me. They, groomed me. Nurtured my skills. I was disciplined. Obedient and above all else, faithful to my Lead Hand.
What happened? War. Madness. Endless suffering, not for the faint of heart. I began losing pieces of myself that day…
What now?
