I have a tier 2 warlock that hasn't been played yet this season, but I am playing him this Saturday. He has 31 TCP available, but is all filled up on magic items after doing most of the conversion to season 9. How should I spend these TCP? I was thinking scrolls, but I don't know which ones would be optimal. If there are other good ideas, I'd love to hear about them.
1) Pick up a magic item from the season 8 evergreen lists (Slippers of Spider Climbing were my favorite). You can also pick up a +2 shield or +2 weapon or +2 rod of the pact master which might be useful as a pure warlock and not available in season 9 unless you find the right adventure. On the other hand, you might have already picked out three better magic items from your available unlocks. In either case, log the update to the last day of season 8 so no one argues about availability.
2) Each TCP is 50gp. 31 is 1550gp which lets you buy half-plate or even full plate if you can afford it. It is also sufficient for a range of potions or scrolls.
3) Check the TCP cost of scrolls to see whether buying with converted gold or TCP is more cost effective. Some useful scroll suggestions if you can use them:
- comprehend languages (for those occasions when you don't have anyone who can cast the spell) - my rogue picked up some of these
- identify (as above - might help with finding cursed items)
- remove curse (season 9 might force you to keep a cursed item if you pick one up forcing you to discard one of your magic items until you can get rid of it ... if you can't get spellcasting services before the session ends. If you have a cleric in the group you are probably fine. If not, the scroll may come in handy).
- raise dead - always useful if there is no cleric around
- revivify - as above
4) Material components for raise dead/revivify. The cleric may not want to cast the spell on you unless you can provide the quite expensive material component. It isn't really fair for them to be out of pocket in an AL game because your character didn't make it :) ... some clerics may not even have purchased the material components for some of these spells so carrying your own can be useful.
Thanks for the scroll suggestions. Those were some that I hadn't considered. I was also considering scroll for spells with costly material components. Do any of those stick out as worthwhile?
For the healing spells, it is generally more cost effective to use the spellcasting services than buy scrolls. The main issue with spellcasting services is that they aren't typically available in the middle of an adventure unless you are in a city which the DM reasonably thinks would house a temple of a god that could provide those services. Otherwise, it is mostly a downtime activity. The costs of most of the scrolls equal or exceed the most common material costs.
e.g.
revivify - 3rd level - costs 300gp for scroll - material component costs 300gp - so no savings - but this one can't be cast as a spellcasting service and having the scroll could let other casters use it even if it isn't prepared
raise dead - 5th level - costs 1000gp for scroll - material cost is 500gp - spell casting service is 1000gp - scroll and spellcasting service are the same
remove curse 3rd level - costs 300gp for scroll - no material cost - spellcasting service cost is 90gp - much cheaper as a spellcasting service
reincarnation - 5th level - costs 1000gp for scroll - material cost is 1000gp - not available as a spell casting service but scroll is the same as the material costs
greater restoration - 5tg level - costs 1000gp for scroll - material cost is 100gp - spellcasting service is 450gp - spellcasting service is cheaper.
Most of these are cheaper if someone in your party can cast the spell and you provide the material component. (e.g. greater restoration or raise dead), then spellcasting services and finally buying the scroll. However, there are wide range of utility spells that you might be able to cast from a scroll depending on your class that aren't worth you either picking as spells or spending a slot preparing. This includes things like comprehend languages, identify, leomund's tiny hut (if you have lots of gp) and others for situations where no one in your party has the spell.

Investing in a few Death Ward scrolls is also not a bad idea, I've learned from experience. (AL PC -- Storm Sorcerer/ Tempest Cleric)
