For my friend's campaign, I'm building a Tortle spore druid, and I wanna try building a melee build, I think my cantrips will be shillelagh and primal savagery. I was looking through spells and I saw Absorb elements, a first level spell which takes a reaction and gives you resistance to a certain element type that you are reacting to and gives you an extra d6 of the type in your next melee attack. Should I be using that? I'd also like some other spell suggestions at later levels, and if I don't like it I can just change it, I am a druid after all.
I like it as a 1 lvl spell particularly at higher levels of play. Gaining resistance is super nice for a first level reaction spell. You can cast it at higher levels in conjunction with wizard/cleric/bard/etc AOE spells to increase your damage. Also the damage you get to melee doesn't change if you receive less damage from the resistance, meaning taking 1 cold damage can give you resistance (0 damage) and 1d6 extra damage.
Absorb elements is good for ALL classes... not just melee druids. As long as you have a free hand to cast as a reaction, its always worth preparing the spell.
The added elemental damage is MEH, especially since most creatures that can do elemental damage from a non-spell source (ie breath weapon, etc), usually also have resistance to that element. It's not really worth the damage increase for Upcasting, but for a level 1 spell slot, its always worth using
Dont forget, the added elemental damage does not have to be a melee WEAPON.. it just has to be a melee attack, so you can also use it with melee spell attacks like Thorn Whip(reach 30') or Primal savagery
