I've just dived into the world of DnD and I'm so excited!!!
SO I've got a general idea of the character I want to play as...a goliath druid! Their name is Zagga, a giant lovable goofball that has been sent away from their tribe for being more connected to nature than fighting. In my group we have the background of a Far Traveler, and I think that'd fit nicely into my character, coming from far off mountains and traveling around connecting to nature before finding my party. This would include a cartographer tool set.
I'd like to be a Warden Druid, does that mean I can use any simple or martial weapon? And how many can I use?
I'm struggling deciding what to aim for at Lvl 3 for druid subclass, I'm leaning towards the Circle of Stars (fits in with far traveller nicely) or Circle of Moon? What would you recommend?
I want to be able to go into battles without worrying whilst also having the ability to support my team and cast spells. One idea I had being a goliath druid was also changing into large animals (I read you can turn into dinosaurs if you encounter them??!) And the other would be Circle of the Star and turning into a big bright stormy goliath (idk I think that'd look sick)
My ideas for cantrips are druidscraft and either produce flame or guidance. What do guys think would be better flame or guidance? My ideas for spells are healing word, entangle, thunderwave and goodberry. Happy for any suggestions
Lastly my ability stats are more heavily on wisdom and strength, with intelligence being my lowest at 8 and my dexterity at 10. Is this still playable ability points for druids?
I'm not sure if I'm missing anything eep, anyways thank you so much for the read! I'd really love to hear your opinions and suggestions :)
Here are my thoughts/rationale. Re Wardens, the 2024 PHB says:
you gain proficiency with Martial weapons and training with Medium armor.
So, yes, you are proficient with all weapons, simple and martial (because all druids are proficient with simple weapons). I think you can use as many weapons as you can carry (which is up to your DM). Also, it really doesn't make sense to have > 1 ranged weapon, or > 1 weapon that does a specific type of damage (e.g., piercing, bludgeoning, etc.)
I always recommend choosing the subclass that you would enjoy playing the most. What people enjoy varies: some enjoy playing a specific thematic subclass they find appealing, some enjoy optimizing a certain part of the game, e.g., damage, control, etc. What subclass you should choose depends on what you enjoy.
The rule about only being able to wild shape into beasts that you've seen has been removed from the official rules in 2024. (But ask your DM about dinosaurs because there may not be dinosaurs in your DM's world/campaign. For example, in my world/campaign, there are no dinosaurs.)
Like subclass, cantrips & spells chosen depend on what you want. That said, IMO Goodberry and Entangle are 2 of the best low-level druid spells in the game which I always choose. I'd also select Ice Knife for a ranged option. Typically, Shillelagh is a great druid spell, that scales well, but you're playing a Warden who can use martial weapons, which do more damage than a quarterstaff with Others may disagree with me here because it scales so well.
You definitely want Wisdom to be your highest ability score. Strength will also help when using martial weapons, then I'd have Constitution be your third highest because Druid's have lots of concentration spells (and Constitution is the ability score used to maintain concentration).

Started playing AD&D in the late 70s and stopped in the mid-80s. Started immersing myself into 5e in 2023
