I'm a Land Druid and I was just looking at future spells just to become more familiar with them and it clicked with me that polymorph turns the being into a beast and that got me thinking, why isn't polymorph used more as a set up? For instance as a level 14 land druid(don't need to be level 14 land druid for whole thing to work) you can polymorph that singular big bad, if in that situation, into a low wisdom beast like a giant scorpion and watch as they have a -1 on their wisdom save to have a chance of hitting you for the round. At that point, you can cast animal friendship on them so they no longer try and kill your teammates and if this is a guard who has been guarding the super secret ancient thing for centuries you can cast speak with animals to ask your new best friend where the stick with the star on it is and is it safe to grab? Not as smart now but if it's dealt with it daily probably remembers where it is like any animal would remember where their home is. Then just leave before the hour is up. Yea that's 3 spells you just used to end a situation but in most cases, you'd probably use more than 3 spells if big enough bad and saving your teammates and yourself some health. Am I missing anything to make this work?
Or if you have an arcane caster in your party with you, turn it into a rat, let the other person cast sleep, everyone else get around it and attack at once. oh look it has low AC right now and any save is probably lower than normal congrats you just did access damage to them and now sleep is useful again casting it at low level when you are higher levels.
Any other polymorph combos you all can think of or a reason that wouldn't work? Let me know.
The sleep bit doesn't work too well since once the first hit lands, the rest will be on its normal form, though it will be prone at least.
Personally I'm a fan of polymorph and toss into bag of devouring, but that requires a bag of devouring. Lots of fun if your DM thought you would get rid of it after he gave you a "cursed" item instead of the bag of holding you wanted.
Turning a major opponent into something like a cat is an effective strategy, but it’s temporary because when Polymorph is over they’re back to their full HP. You will get one free critical attack in against a big bad nasty, but the damage will wake them up and they’ll still have all of their special abilities when they get to act again and they’ll just pick up where they left off. It’s much better to use Polymorph to keep the most dangerous opponent out of the fight while you focus on the weaker ones so when you finally face it you only have to worry about it.
