I enjoy the RP of a good ranger. But in my view there are two dedicated "outdoor" classes, so I want to try a druid. I am pretty sure I'd like to RP the druid in a similar fashion to a ranger. Is there are general druid build that supports this? I think the wildshape is similar in RP to a beast companion. But there are other things a ranger does typically in a RP. They track down an enemy or a friend, attack with a bow often, help feed and guide the party through the wilderness, notice the behavior of wildlife and make inferences about impending threats, such as a flock of birds suddenly takes flight nearby ...
So is there a build like this that is generally understood and accepted?

Maybe moon or wildfire? I think that gives the feel of ranger, maybe even land, traveling and just generally tending to it, living off of it etc. Obviously go wood elf, or else you'll be stuck with a shortbow, but light crossbow isn't bad.

All druids can RP as the protector of the forest type. Most of the subclasses would work, depending on the take you want. Circle of Dreams could be interesting if you wanted to lean more into the fey stuff. Land is a great option too, especially since you bond to a particular environment. But shepherd druid would also be an excellent choice. You can speak to beasts without having to use the Speak with Animals spell. And they are great at summoning beasts and fey.
I’m torn between Circle of the Moon and Circle of the Shepherd. I think of a Ranger as a hunter and/or an explorer and those are the two circles that I can see hunting or exploring. A Shepherd Druid summoning a pack of wolves and wild shaping into a wolf to hunt with them seems so thematic to me.
