So I finally prepared Moonbeam on my Druid, level 10 so I guess better late than never. I had thought it might not be the best spell to concentrate on as the damage seemed so-so and took my action to move. Plus I was using more control and summon spells. But then I started thinking that maybe it would be worth upcasting for better damage and a sustained source of damage round to round. I've cut down on conjure/summon spells so as not to drag down combat (I typically just conjured two Dire Wolves with Conjure Animals to keep combat moving anyway)
Since I haven't used it before I thought I would ask what people thought of the spell and whether or not it was worth upcasting or just leaving it alone and using the higher level slots for something better.
Depends entirely on the situation. Consider the following factors:
1) Are you targeting enemies with low con saves, the shapeshifter tag, or vulnerability to radiant damage?
2) How does your font line look? If you have multiple front-line fighters, it makes moonbeam better. It's fairly easy through positioning to end up with a situation where the enemy is forced to choose between staying in moonbeam or taking attack of opportunity. If one of them is using booming blade, it's even better.
3) Are your party members going to use grapples or spells to restrain enemies or throw/push them into the beam? This makes moonbeam better.
4) Does your team need damage or control/support more?
Basically, in some situations, sure. But probably not. FWIW spells in general slow the game down about as much as conjure animals if you limit the total # to 1 or 2. In a generic situation i'd rather have 2 dire wolves than an upcast moonbeam. They do more damage and help control the battlefield.

What are your thoughts?
