One of my players is claiming Grappling is now a free action with the Unarmed Fighting Style of Fighters.
I'm trying to wrap my head around it, but the language is a bit unclear in the class features section of his character sheet. It lists Grappling with (No Action) besides it. I've ruled that the fighter still has to land a successful hit in order to grapple someone, but beyond that I'm not sure how this is different from Grappling before the TCoE Grappling updates. Can someone clarify what makes the new grappling fighting style different from standard grappling rules?
The Unarmed Fighting fighting style does not make grappling a free action. The only thing it changes with regard to grappling is allows you to deal extra damage to a creature you have already grappled. To grapple them in the first place, you still need to use one of your attacks and make a contested Athletics check.
