I'm eager to homebrew a version of Oonga (essentially Greyhawk's Dnd King Kong) so that the party can trick him into a dimensional portal so he can duke it out with a Tarrasque (Dnd Godzilla) ravaging the world in a one shot. My problem is that since I started with 5e I don't understand the old feats (much less the epic ones) of 1st edition AD&D. There are obviously some other confusions as well. I'm not sure if I should just try to recreate the substance of the character from scratch or if I should try to better understand the original statblock and then convert it and nerf it so that it doesn't completely body 5e Mr. T(arrasque). What does everyone think?
I am sorry but there is no comparison between a Tarrasque and Godzilla. Godzilla would mop the floor with a Tarrasque.
But *if* you are going to assert that the Tarrasque is Godzilla, then the answer is "no one can beat it." Because Godzilla always finds a way to win. (Yes, I am blatantly ignoring Godzilla vs. the Thing, King Kong vs. Godzilla, and Godzilla vs. Destroyah... those movies do not exist as far as I am concerned....). Godzilla is King of the Monsters. Nobody beats him.
Now... that having been said... I am not sure who should win but one fun thing you could maybe do is when the 2 of them fight, have the players play one of the monsters and you run the other. Or even more fun, if you make them close to equal, have half the players play the Tarrasque and half play Oonga.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.

That isn't an AD&D stat block. It looks like post 2nd edition to me, if that's any use in finding conversion guides. If AD&D stat blocks would help you: You can find the first-ever stat block for the Tarrasque in the Monster Manual 2; and I think a close parallel for Oonga/Kong in the regrettably-named Oriental Adventures Sourcebook. Kaiju battles having been popular for so very very long, the writers of that tome already anticipated this question with a creature family called the Gargantua. That Tarrasque would wipe the floor with that Oonga, just on the basis of the insta-kill bite of sharpness. That's as much crunchy help as I can give, I'm afraid.

This is 100% correct. Godzilla has the heart of a champion. That's why he and Gamera have never fought. There's respect there. And Gamera could wreck the Tarrasque.
The Tarrasque is certainly more highly based on Godzilla than its mythical namesake. Of course, Godzilla is stronger than the Tarrasque because he is nuclear powered. Also he is smarter because he has mad dance moves and can talk to Mothra. But I'm going for the closest Dnd approximations. Awwww man, I love Godzilla vs Mothra and King Kong vs. Godzilla! But I respect your headcanon.
I want to make them very close to equal. Maybe Tarrasque has higher AC and Oonga has health regeneration to even it out or so. A completely straight conversion would lead to Oonga being too dominant.

There is an old quote from the 1970s Godzilla comic, written by Doug Moench, that I have never forgotten in all the years since I read it: "Never let it be said that Godzilla is unwilling to meet any challenge, anywhere, at any time. For he is Godzilla, King of all Monsters. Long live the king!"
I love Godzilla vs Mothra and King Kong vs. Godzilla! But I respect your headcanon.
I actually like Godzilla vs. the Thing, mostly because of the twin fairies. Shh, don't tell anyone. (Especially Godzilla -- I like my house!)
