There is a wizard in my party who wants to try casting Flesh to Stone on a devil with the hopes of having a devil become petrified then chipping off his head to keep as a wall mount in his kill room. I'm curious if anyone has done this before? When you kill a devil on the material plane, it's body disappears and it re materializes in the nine planes of hell. If he successfully petrifies the devil, then as a DM I would give him the xp for killing the creature. But I was thinking what would happen if the wizard used a wish spell to undo the flesh to stone a month later? Does the devil's soul come back to this body, or not - I don't think it could occupy two bodies at the same time.
My initial thoughts are that this would only work if you did it on the plane of hell the devil materializes on. No other plane would work. If you cast flesh to stone on a devil in the material plane and you successfully petrify the creature, then it would disappear in a puff of smoke and the soul goes back to the nine planes of hell.
Petrifaction doesn't kill the target, and thus doesn't trigger effects that occur on death. If you kill it after petrifying it, it will dematerialize and be sent home as normal. It is unclear what kills a petrified target, Flesh to Stone specifies 'If the creature is physically broken while Petrified it suffers from similar deformities if it reverts to its original state' which suggests a fair amount of damage can be done without actually being fatal, but most likely decapitation is excessive. He could keep the entire devil as a really ugly statue, though.
