I was thinking of starting up pay to play 1 shots. Honestly I am just a casual dungeon master, but I always get a lot of people interested in my beginner 1 shots. I was thinking of doing 1 shots and charging $1 to play. Obviously not a lot of money, but still it can buy me a nice coffee sometime. Do any of you guys do this and what are the pros and cons of this?
If you can get the interest than go ahead. If people feel $1 is too much then you can always allow them to buy a ticket which allows them access to multiple one shots. I personally wouldn't do this but this because I really only play with friends. DMs are in fairly high demand so I think you will get some people wanting in. If you are worried about who you are letting in then have an interview and maybe a session 0 before you allow them to pay in and play.
Pay-to-Play often ranges from $5 to $20 per person per session, with some high-end professionals earning $250+ per in-person session.
That said, $1 is an interesting idea. It's more like a paywall than compensation. On the upside, it will filter out people who aren't serious about playing, or aren't old enough to pay, but won't discourage anyone either.
You might set up a Patreon or Amazon Wishlist and accept Donations/Gifts. That way, if any of your players want to go the extra mile, they can show their gratitude directly. Many people would prefer to literally give their DM coffee, rather than give them the cash equivalent.

I hope this helps.
