I am new to being a DM, i have run around 8-10 sessions about an hour each for one game,
This was for my brothers and I (one was our usual DM so he helped me along a bit), so i felt no pressure on how I DM, but now I'm thinking of finding players for a game.
I have a fair a good year of experience as a player i am not as experienced as most players but i am not unknown to how DnD works
I have no official DnD sources, before I've used apps and resources I can find and use for free.
So the point of the post is what's the best advice you have for a new DM going through a potential trial by fire,
There is way too little information here to so much as guess. The first thing I have to ask is how much experience do you have as a player?
Edit: I see you added a line about how much experience you have as a player. Thank you.
It's a pity there isn't a New DM's Guide up there to match the New Player's Guide, but I'd suggest you read it, and get your players to read it if they haven't. Have everyone use D&D Beyonds' character generator. The Basic Rules covers most things, and all of that is free.
First, read the PHB and DMG cover to cover. But mostly worry about PHB chapters 7, 8 and 9.
Theres a series of videos called running the game by a guy named Matt colville. They will gives you lots and lots of advice.
When you get your group together have a session 0 before you start playing. There’s advice on how to run a session 0 in Tasha’s.
Start with a published adventure. I hear Lost Mines of Phandelver is great for beginning players and DMs.
When you start playing, if everyone is having fun, you’re doing it right, even if you don’t strictly follow the rules.
If you don’t know something and can’t find the rule in a minute or less, just tell the group you’re going to make a ruling, and use that for the rest of the session, then you’ll try to find out for sure before the next session.
