As part of a campaign I have been running, the party ran afoul of a twisted Archdruid. They cost him a favored magical item and ruined some of his plans. Soon he will be seeking revenge directly. The party consists of 3 PCs, currently 7th level. They may not fight him at this level, more likely at 8-9th level. They are a Wizard (Transmuter), a figher (Blood Hunter, Order of the Lycan) and a Rogue (Assassin). They have some decent magical items.
First question is - is this a reasonable challenge for them, with the Archdruid's CR of 12? Especially if he can lure them into the forest, into a clearing he has prepared? I foresee hitting them with entangle, then firestorm or wall of fire.
I actually want the archdruid to die in the campaign, but I don't want to hand it to the party, so I want it to be a tough, memorable fight. Thoughts appreciated on what party levels would be appropriate for this.
The archdruid is a pretty typical glass cannon monster, if they surprise him they can take him out. If they don't surprise him, he casts animal shapes on thirty friendly squirrels and buries the PCs in cave bears.
