I've been building a campaign out of Candlekeep Mysteries, and I could use some inspiration material to fill in some of the gaps between the Candlekeep modules. There's so much material now, but it's not easy to sift through all of the books. I would love to hear which bits of other adventures you or your players particularly enjoyed running. :)
I really like the way CM is laid out. I'm basically doing a full 1-20 campaign using mostly CM, but am looking for some good modules from other books to add in. I'm cutting out a few of the less personally interesting books in CM (like Mazfroth's with the jackalweres in Baldur's Gate), and spending more time exploring others (like The Book of the Raven, where Chateau Brantifax is now the entry point into Mordent in Ravenloft, where the party gets trapped and will have to defeat Godefroy)
Basic premise is that long ago Alaundo foresaw that Candlekeep would become a new Dread Domain of Ravenloft. Rather than allow his beloved library to fall to shadow, he decided to intervene by writing a series of short prophecies linked to a number of different books that he foresaw would eventually end up in Candlekeep and cross paths with a likely hero when they would be in a place to change the fate of Candlekeep.
The prophecies will act as a sort of treasure map that the characters follow to find and solve these books, which lead the party to clues that will eventually reveal the truth about Myriim - in reality a mist dragon, whose treasure hoard of books was stolen and copied into Candlekeep's collection, before the originals were hidden away where Myriim would never be able to find them. With her physical form now bound to Candlekeep with spells from her own library, she was unable to acquire a new treasure hoard. When the time of her natural death finally came after centuries of servitude, she had no hoard to consume and was unable to pass on, lingering at the border of death while her physical form rotted away over centuries. Needless to say, this fate broke her sanity long ago.
Ironically, the enchantments that bound her within Candlekeep's walls have also faded, and she has been able to roam her old territory around Candlekeep for decades, which she does under the cover of great blankets of mist she creates. She rarely goes out, preferring to remain close to "her" collection. Her plan is to commit an act so heinous (like releasing a fungal plague) that Candlekeep would be plunged into Ravenloft, where she can assume control as the domains Dread Lord, and finally get down to reading her books in peace and quiet.
By following Alaundo's Prophecy, the party is led to Myriim's hidden treasure hoard, which they might return to her, allowing her to finally die a natural death. Or you know, big epic ghost dragon battle while Ravenloft's mists descend on Candlekeep.
