For context, I have been running a group of folks I met online thanks to the quarantine through Descent into Avernus for over a year. They're now in Avernus proper and I'm trying to find ways to mess with them and make the lines between right and wrong in a place of pure lawful evil harder to see. One player, a monk, has already fallen prey to the plane's Pervasive Evil effect, and now I'm trying think up temptations for the others.
My Question: Do any of you think it's possible, while in Avernus, for Asmodeus to interfere with a lvl 8 cleric of Tempus connection to their deity, to the point the cleric believes their god has abandoned them?
Clerics are supposed to get their powers from their connection to the deities which they serve, but I certainly wouldn't want to tell a player that their spells stop working all of a sudden, since that probably wouldn't be too much fun for them. Instead, maybe you can 'reskin' the effects of the spells they cast. I know my cleric would be most distressed if they went to cast Spiritual Weapon, and discovered that instead of its usual appearance given to him by his deity, it appeared to be demonic instead.
