I've DM'd, more from a Pathfinder background, but it's been five years or so. Several years ago I was in a DnD 5e campain, and the rule-set was fine. I'm VERY pleased with DnDBeyond.com as a tool for maintaining "character sheets". That, and if I want something, I buy something, that "something" shows up on my character sheet as an option. The male player who asked to participate already has his account here, and my wife will have her own account rather than using me to manage her "character sheet" for her. We may have a third player with my wife's adult son, but I'm not sure if his work schedule will permit him to be consistently with us in the game.
The Interested, the name I'll use for the close friend who asked about starting a game, has not actually played with a group, but he's interested enough to put money down on books from DnDBeyond and read up on it. He knows my wife and I played, and asked if we could form a group and play. It would have to be online, he's across the country. My wife's son, if he joins us, would be playing from Canada. We already have a voice server that we regularly communicate on.
I need a "game plan," as in the meta-sense of knowing how to start moving forward to a "game night" starting next year.
What format of "online" to choose? Do I use Roll20? The DM generally forks over the ph4t l3wt to buy the modules, books used, and so on. I don't have a ton of money to throw around, so I'm likely going to start pretty bare-bones and see how this pans out. I'd love Dungeon Full Dive. I have to throw money at campaign materials first, see the group continues, save up, buy more later. If not Roll20, what are other options for this situation?
With just the two players, I know they'll be very "squishy". I know why there is almost always a group of at least four, but this is what I've got for certain for now. Any recommendations for handling this?
With Pathfinder, I know I could fall back on Pathfinder Society modules, starting with the free ones, to get people started into a game. The Interested mentioned Curse of Strahd... I've been out too long, never DM'd 5e, new group... I want to see how we do as a group getting started before I lead a campaign. But I simply don't know the lay-of-the-land with D&D material to know what I'm looking for. Would anyone have suggestions for low-level one-offs to get us started?
I may have other questions, I'll just reply to this thread so there's context with it. But I want to have a plan ready to present that's fleshed out before I offer the group a game in the new year. Thank you for your time and assistance.
