Stibbles codex of companions is great, and choc full of great pet options. Matt Colville also just released a new book detailing how to make a pet and multiple pet options for DnD.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
A player in the game I'm running found and kept a cat--whom he calls Chew Toy. Really the pet is more for character flavor and does not really do anything besides...well...cat. Since the players have a base of operation on many occasions the cat stays there while the party is out adventuring.
One of my players has a pet stirge. I mostly ignore it except for RP flavor, and I conveniently forget he exists whenever there are AoE effects.
Another player managed to win the trust of a one-winged, wounded pegasus. It's now her mount, though she rarely rides it. Rolls separate initiative for it and has to deal with stabling.
My players love RP, so their pets are cherished members of the party. Makes for fun scenes.
Personally: I think RP pets are brilliant; but then, I'm a huge fan of teh Find Familiar spell as well.
Pets can often be something that an entire group will bond around and use as an RP hook as well; so it doesn't just have to benefit the person WITH the pet.

Pet in what sense? Like a dog that just follows around and is purely for role play, or like a ranger’s companion, which will help in fights and such?

I don't recommend pets that actually play a combat role, they're a big headache to track and balance, but RP pets are fine.
