So i'm a new DM and have an idea that the possible next town my players are going to will have a circus visiting where the next adventure happens. Which sounds better - Its participants aren’t there willingly or a dangerous magical beast escapes? Or both? Maybe the escape beast leads them to realize none of the performers are willingly there?
An ideas from more experienced dms welcome! ideas for unusual beasts/creatures that could be performing?
All of the ideas are great; it just depends on the kind of story you're telling. If you want it (the session, or this arc maybe) more combat-based, the escaped beast is a fun and easy jumping off point. If you want more RP and intrigue, go with the unwilling participants angle. Both of these set very different tones for what will happen.
I voted for the magical beast escape, just because I like interacting with animals in D&D. There's also a lot of variation that can happen: the party could kill it, capture it, lure it back, keep it as a pet, become animal rights advocates, etc...
Not sure what level your party is. You might want to make it a creature that can provide them a challenge if they are to engage it in combat (even if they deal non-lethal damage to it).
I feel like it will be kind of an arc maybe 2 or 3 sessions? And unless they chose to a different location (they have 3 direction they can pick to go) this will be their second quest so they will be level 2 or 3 as its a new campaign.
I know it will be best to see how my party play and get a feel of what they might enjoy best which is why I was leaning towards combining the two ideas so they get the best of both worlds RP and combat. But I'm glad you think the idea in general is a good one.
