So I'm running Rime of the Frostmaiden with two groups right now. I have one player who has the doppleganger character secret and when he built his character backstory, he somewhat randomly selected the Arcane Brotherhood as one of his enemies. He's got this whole thing he's playing about how this character hates wizards.
I didn't catch this until we were too far into the game to walk it back. But I'm about ready to send them to deal with Xardarok Sunblight which will then introduce them to Vellyne Harpell. I really think there's a chance this guy will try to kill her or at least refuse to work with her.
Anyone have suggestions about another ally that could guide them through chapter 5 - 7? The book seems like it's essentially requiring them to ally with Vellyne Harpell and I'm having a hard time envisioning a different way.
My party didn't learn Vellynne was with the Brotherhood until long after Sunblight was handled. Vellynne was just a mage with a vendetta against Auril and an interest in Netherese artifacts. You could keep it that vague, if you want. Heck, you can even have her hide her magic. Maybe she's just a rich, well-connected resident of Icewind Dale who is sick of the Everlasting Rime.
For what it's worth, my party only allied with Vellynne out of necessity, not because we liked or trusted her. She just happened to be the only one who knew more than we did about how to fight Auril. She died in combat shortly before we got the Codicil of White, but our DM let us discover a journal of hers with notes to find the entrance to the Caves of Hunger and we moved forward without issue.
There are some other characters from the arcane brotherhood.
The ghost of nass lantomir and professor skant. If your players can make it to Aurils abode in the sea of moving ice her familiar can lead them to her body. These two are likely the best option. They have allot of information.
Dzaan's simulacrum in the lost spire of netheril. He can achieve human form and may help the palyers if they help him do so and he thinks he will get what he wants.
Avarice. she is evil but powerful and comes with any alliance with the knights of the black sword. She hates vellyne so may warm to those who killed her
Other helpers
Reghed Elk Tribe. Their leader will have a vision of the players travelling to the fallen city and meet them in chapter 6.
knights of the black sword. They hate the duergar and may help people who oppose them. Avarice is also some what of a package deal with them.
Finally the players can conceivably succeed on their own
