I have an upcoming encounter with a pair of taverns, one of which is run by a bard from the culinary college (a homebrew bard school I've earmarked to fill in later), and I have this image of her meals being magically enhanced (think Heston Blumenthal with sorcery powers). So soups that dance in the bowl, drinks which are magically fountains, and so on.
and I'm finding myself without any ideas!
I need dishes which appear extravagant and magical, so that I can paint an amazing picture without fumbling for ideas as I improv! The few I have are:
fountain drinks
animated food (dolphins swimming in gravies)
Performing food which assembles itself when it is served
cold flames that flavour ice cream
unusual meats (gelatinous cube, for example)
cocktails
Anyone else got any cool ideas for visually awesome magical food for a magical inn?
A city in my campaign has a magic candy shop and spice bazaar, so I've had fun with things like this too. Some of these might spark some ideas for you:
- Cinnamon-flavored dishes made with brimstone so they actually smoke (just like mama hellspawn used to make) - Foods that change color and flavor to be more appealing to different species - Bioluminescent produce from the Underdark
You might also consider magical table service a la Beauty and the Beast:
- Animated cutlery and serving dishes - Flagons that refill themselves (costs extra, of course) - Animated napkins and handkerchiefs that clean up spills - Torches that automatically dim based on how much alcohol you've consumed (a hangover recovery room, if you will!)
Sounds like a fun tavern chain! I wonder how many Michelin stars they are...
You could have swan shaped crescent rolls that fly to the guest's plates.
Or plates that say "Hot! Hot stuff here. Don't burn yourself."
A dish that mixes the ingredients that are poured into it and the result is a spectacular sparkly frozen concoction that tastes like (Snozzberrys, Ambrosia, Salmon parfait, Lobster newberg, A Mudslide, Crunchy Peking Duck, ...)
An effect that mimics sparklers but makes ones mouth feel like something is popping on their tongue.
A plate with seemingly nothing on it, but if one puts on the special glasses or drinks the special wine, the spectral "fish" is visible.
A shadow version of a food that either cleanses the palette or tastes the opposite of what it looks like.
Cold soup that seems to disappear if left too long.
