So, I had an idea for an item, ish, of a potion (or in this case a beverage) that contained vampire blood, that would turn people who drank it into Vampire Spawns. I want to make it possible so that a PC could counter it in some way, so my question is, what kind of spell would be necessary to neutralize it before it is consumed, Purify Food and Drink (It specifics non-magical in the text, and I don't know if vampire blood counts as magical), Dispel Magic (again, does it count as magical?), Remove Curse (Does it count as a curse, maybe, not sure), or something else? Also, I was thinking of letting a PC with either Alchemist Supplies' proficiency or Brewer's Kit proficiency be able to recognize and neutralize it before consumption, given some time and materials. I'm not sure what would work, or at the very least be in line with how things are laid out.
So, by the text of the creature's ability, it isn't the vampire blood that makes a spawn, it's being drained to 0 and buried in the ground. Which is to say, you decide how magical or not this vampire blood contaminated potion is and what effects it has.
Personally, I'd allow purify food & drink and remove curse, but not dispel magic, maybe something with the tool or skill proficiencies as you mention. Also, I'd allow a con save to negate the effects, perhaps multiple saves in the manner of the Medusa's petrifying gaze.
It’s a homebrew item, so really, anything you want works.
To me, remove curse feels right. But in addition to the spells you listed for other options, I’d add ceremony (it can make holy water, so maybe it can purify blood). Maybe greater restoration? Or maybe a daylight spell? Dunk the vial in running water?
It really comes down to how hard you want it to be. If you want it easy, make a low level spell the party can already cast. If you want it harder, make it something they need to quest for someone who can do it for them.
Thanks for the input. I am thinking of making it not too hard to neutralize before ingestion (weak to sunlight/Daylight, holy water and remove curse), but definitely make it harder to deal with if it takes effect onto a creature (context-wise, transformation into a vampire spawn can be prevented after ingestion, but is situational).
