so ive dabbled in it a few times between face to face games to keep me immersed in the dnd world which I never really want to leave. I like play by post but it’s a massively different pace with a totally different vibe to it. Anyone got any experience with things they have done to make theirs more exciting and immersive, more like a tabletop or online session? Or anything that has made it stand apart because you’ve managed to play to the strengths of the format? Would love to hear your stories, successes, ideas, does and do nots.
Adventure's I've published on DMs Guild: The Temple of Bhaal - A gothic horror themed "one-shot" single session adventure for 1st level characters. The Palace of Evendur - An ethereal fairy tale "one-shot" single session adventure for 1st level characters.
I agree it is not the same. I may be reaching for something I’ll never achieve but I’m trying to find techniques and methods to get as close as I can with PBP. Apologies but it didn’t mean to call this thread Tom! I accidentally left the title blank and my phone must have automatically named it after myself somehow? If there is a way to change the title that would probably help

For me pbp is perfect. I have a daily job, rugby trainings and a girlfriend. The fact that i can jump into forum read other posts ant take part in adventure is awesome. I am from non-english country so this is also quite interesting (describing abstract situations with foreign language)
Tom I didn't see you sneak back in. I had been afraid you'd gotten worse. I hope you're well.
You know Play by Post is just very different from playing at the table. In some ways it's better. More thought out. Mostly its better where my real life friends and I have real lives. PbP makes it easier to get around that.
Sort of like comparing apples to oranges. You may like DnD at the table. You may like DnD on the forum. But you may not like both. Since we last met I've started DMing the thing that can loosely be referred to as a campaign.
Here's some things I've done dramatically different than at the table: initiative is a bit meaningless. Allies go, enemies go. You go in recorder you post and once everyone goes everyone's up. If you are the last to act, then the monster acts. Well you can act again. If I had the players wait their turn they may not be back on the day or even in the hour that came up.
Furthermore I'll act on the players behalf. If they've been able to go for 24 hours and haven't and they're the last left of their allies, I'll PM them and give them a few more hours (8-24 depending on curcumstances) then I'll choose the best action I can think of or ignore the turn entirely and we move on.
And finally. I have too many players. Way too many in fact. But its not a typical campaign. If players disappear or become inactive or anything there are still more players there, so things don't die down. While my experience is unique I'd guess from it that, where you'd normally take 4 or 5 it wouldn't hurt to take 10 in PbP. That theory may require more data.
