I am a player of 2 years but just finished a winter one shot (turned to a 3 shot). I play with a group that has 2 campaigns so our main DM has a chance to play. We are switching back to his campaign since I just finished my winter 3-shot. While we do this I am trying to decide which module I want to do. Most of my players have either been playing a year or more and 1 player is a brand new player, been playing for 2 months. So I am trying to pick a module that will be easy for me to run but also one that seems interesting to me and my players who are all at the point where we usually start at level 5. So I’m wondering which modules that aren’t a starter module would be good for a semi beginner dm to run… I have already done icepier peak as a player and don’t have any interest really to do the other starter modules & I don’t want a mostly dungeon crawl I like variety. I like the idea of Icewind Dale but I’ve heard it’s a bit difficult for new/new-ish DMs to read and work with but have heard mixed reviews with enough good that I will probably run it in the future. It doesn’t HAVE be dnd beyond content, I do own most of the modules though so it shouldn’t be a problem. (Hopefully that all made sense and I didn’t repeat myself too much 😅)
The ones I’m looking at are
- Waterdeep dungeon of the mad mage- starting to not consider this from what I’ve heard, it’s 95% or more of dungeon crawling
- Wild beyond the witch light
- Using the journey through the radiant citadel in a sort of homebrew
- Ghosts of saltmarsh
-Shadow of the Dragon Queen
-Icewind dale- rime of the frost maiden— I would just do trial and error and watch videos about it and hope it ends up being fun, even if I have to tweak things along the way
-I’m slightly considering reading the lost mines of phandelver but revamping it to be more fun for players that prefer to start at level 5
-also open to suggestions that again don’t have to be dnd content. I do own almost all the content so the above options are ones I own and am interested in
Okay Dungeon of the Mad Mage is almost pure dungeon craw
I can highly recommend Ghosts of Saltmarsh. You can play the adventures in the book or use some of the several story hooks for side quests. In addition you can start or stop at any level between 1and 12.
Good luck on your first time DMing. Have fun!
