One of my character's overarching campaign goals is to complete a trial set by an Arch fey which is a super cool idea and I love it!
I'd love to tie this into the main story quest which is all about Auril trying to spread winter across the land (bad boo we have to stop her!). The character is a Druid and I want to wording of the trial to be something cryptic at first but slowly as the main plot unravels, you realise they are thematically tied.
I'm having troubles thinking of a cool cryptic way to word the trial so I can give it to them in Session 0 without giving too much of the plot away. So far I'm brain storming something about restoring balance, or tipping the scales? Any talented riddle masters out here?
Who is the archfey? Is it someone with a similar winter-bent like the Prince of Frost and/or a member of his Winter Court who may have designs on bending the eternal winter to their own ends or preventing it to maintain some sort of fey power balance that is beyond mortal understanding?
According to this Archfey entry, even Auril was considered an archfey for a time. Maybe there is a reason the player's "patron" (not a warlock, I know) has for seeing the minor goddess' plans fail. But without a little more info, it would be hard to come up with a thematic "trial" or prophesy, or whatever, that the player must follow.
Perhaps the druid could be sent after a relic hidden in puzzles. The archfey doesn't give many details but seems a little nervous. When the druid finishes navigating the traps and puzzles into the relics' vault or wherever, the relic is gone. All that's left is a clue that leads to the archfey's son. The archfey's son became bitter and jealous for some reason, and took the relic. This is where it ties into the main quest. Auril is powerful on her own, but wasn't quite powerful enough to create a catastrophe of this size. The archfey's son is using the relic to boost her magical capabilities so that she can cause an eternal winter, which is how the archfey's son is getting revenge for whatever reason.
I left some blank details for you to fill in. :)
Hope this helps.
