There are a couple adventures I would like to run but have less than the recommended players and I want to avoid running multiple character per person for simplicity.
What are some approximate metrics I can use to guess a balanced player character level without changing the adventurer.
I have tried to is the DMG rules and xanathar rules but I’m not sure if I’m doing it right.
Lets run through an example. Say I have 6 level 9 characters and I want 4 characters instead.

One way we could do it is with the adventuring day totals. So for 6 level 9 characters that’s 7500 x 6 = 45000
45000 divided by 4 characters is 11250
the closest level to that in the total adventuring day XP table is 12th, but maybe round down because higher levels can have really good spells?
What does everyone think of that guess?
I think with that guess you get your people killed.
i just use this
