So my PCs are wanted to take a job that another adventure group are after. Instead of a bidding war, the quest giver proposed a competition to decide who would get the contract (an escort mission).
This was improvised at the end of last session and I left off with a 'come back tomorrow and I will announce the nature of the competition'.
What sort of thing would make for a simple but engaging contest? I don't want something too time consuming but more than just a basic duel.
Any ideas? Party is a half elf ranger, her pet companion and a dwarven fighter.
So far they've only met the leader of the rival group, a particular pompous high elf Paladin.
My group had a boulder, shears, parchment game at a pub (rock paper scissors) with some dwarf NPC's. The loser had to hold out there hand and it got slapped and had to drink. Huge success and laughs. Maybe a competition along that line - short, sweet, funny?
I'm taking inspiration from poseidon VS Athena here, but what if the town was facing some problem, and they each had to come up with a unique solution which was then judged by the townspeople?

Why do ships ship cargo and cars carry shipments? Why do we have fingertips but not toetips and can tiptoe but can't tipfinger. These are all the questions of the universe.

Maybe something like a scavenger hunt? Have both parties try to gather some items, with the option of a direct fight if they choose
I’m pretty sure Call of the Netherdeep has a rival party embedded in the story. You might look there for inspiration.
