A few years ago I ran LMOP for my family (parents and brother), but it was all of our first campaign and while i knew all of the rules, I didn't explain the concept of the game well enough to them for them to really get it, and the campaign fell apart after about twelve sessions (which is still a lot, i was certainly happy with it).
I am now much more experienced at DMing, and my Dad asked me if I could run a one-shot that could help him actually understand, like, how to play the game "correctly". What that means to me is one that equally emphasizes roleplay and combat, with opportunities to use character abilities outside of combat. I also wouldn't mind it being the basis for a longer campaign (which i would happily homebrew anyway so it doesn't really need to come built in to something).
So, yeah, I'm looking for a good one-shot i can run that would help teach my family what the game should run like. It can be from anywhere, i just need some recommendations :)
Best suggestion I have is to get Tomb of Annihilation (currently on sale!) and check out some of the single encounters that the book has in the "Location in Chult" section of Chapter 2. In there are several encounters in a "jungle adventure" environment, sort of like the newer "Jumanji movie" feel. Lost temples, weird goblins, treehouse rescues, at least one alive dragon, etc. Then take maybe two or three of those encounters and string them together for a night of fun darkest jungle adventure exploration. There are lots of options there, including undead, dinosaurs, undead dinosaurs....you really get a good taste of D&D, all in one package.
