I am an old school white box set D&D game master. I stopped playing when AD&D 2nd edition came out and now I am back. There are LOTS of changes and I am getting up to speed quickly. I would like to take a 1st level group on an adventurers league approved campaign that goes all the way to 20th.
There are a couple of ways to go about doing this. Do you want to run through a published adventure book like Out of the Abyss or tomb of Annihilation? Or are you looking for more of the small Adventure leage one-shot modules that string together over a season to be something of a campaign arc? Each are easy enough to aquire either here, at your local game store, or on the DM's Guild website.

Out of the Abyss was a lot of fun. I'd try that one. Failing that.....people seemed to like Storm King's Thunder and Princes of the Apocalypse wasn't bad.

Out of the Abyss is probably the closest to 1-20 I can think of. The others tend to be a bit shorter. You will still need to insert some other AL material, as it only takes players to about 15th level as written. Some of the Season 3 modules will fit, especially T2 and higher, but plan ahead for them so you can incorporate as needed.
Based on my experience, Out of the Abyss should get you comfortably into the mid teens in an Adventurer's League setting. Storm King's Thunder features some branching choices but if you're completist you can probably get an AL group into the low to mid teens as well. It's tough to do that with Princes of the Apocalypse, Curse of Strahd, or Tomb of Annihilation.
Yawning portal is mostly just a book of standalone adventures over a small level range, but these include some higher level modules as well.
The Dragon King series can get you there as well, but that's two books - Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat.
That said, you'd probably need additional AL modules from DM's guild to get them up to 20. Tier IV modules (level 17-20) really didn't start showing up in great numbers until season 5 (Storm King's Thunder), but you can find a good number of modules out now to get them to max level. These would primarily be in Season's 5 and 7. You'll probably need between 6 and 8 4 hour adventures to get to XP cap (probably 4-5 4-hour adventures to get to level 20).
You can also do Hoard of the Dragon Queen into Rise of Tiamat. As far as I understand, they're supposed to be played one after the other. They also cover 1-17(?) by default with a bit of leeway on the final level depending on how much content the players do/skip.

Just one book please. Tomb of annihilation is not my cup of tea because of the no resurrection or raise dead.
