Hello, I'm a newer dm and I'm having trouble with my party always wanting to split up. Half of the group is trying to do the adventure while the other half always says "my character is staying home" and then they get on their phones and don't pay attention. I have no idea what to do and I try to talk to them more in depth about what their characters are doing but they just don't seem interested. Any help on what I could do to make the story more interesting or any tips in general would be super appreciated. Thanks!!
Talk to your players, individually, out of game. Ask them what's up.
Things that may turn up:
They're not really into D&D. That's cool. You can find some other activity to do together.
They're not enjoying playing with somebody else in the group. This is not something I can really provide advice on.
They, the player, are not into the story. Ask them what they are looking for in the game, and see if your interests can align.
They are into D&D, but they've made a character that doesn't care about what's going on/doesn't want to associate with the rest of the party. This is probably best solved by them making a new character (or reconceptualizing the current one). It's on the players to make characters that'll go adventuring together.
There are likely other reasons, but those are the ones that come to mind.
They may just want to hang out and not play. So have the players whose characters are staying home play some of the Big Bad's minions in combat. That way most of the time they can just hang out until it's time to have fun trying to kill the other players' characters.
