new DM here!! one of my players has to leave my campaign and in discussing how to cap off their story we came up with the idea to do a zombie invasion led by a banshee who was from a sidequest that I have repurposed here.
Essentially my problem is, is that I have to run this essentially as a oneshot, as I need to have the invasion started and finished in one session (3hr's) for my leaving player
The banshee is attacking the town in order to target a holy women who has an innate magical ability to speak with dead - the party is currently with said holy woman except the leaving player who is currently in the saloon putting on a performance to aid the business.
the leaving players character has been feeling as though they want to see their late father again so they can either help the party and leave with the holy woman to briefly speak with their father one more time or I was thinking of using the banshee to lure them in promising a more permanent solution (resurrecting her late father or something of the like)
Id like to either make it combat focused with encounters and a boss fight or an investigation, deciphering why the banshee is targeting the holy woman and what link they have to each other/ the town
how would you go about structuring/ running this? any help is greatly appreciated
Make the banshee need the Holy Woman for some ritual, maybe some sort of permanent possession to return to the world of the living. Have the ritual need to take place during a certain event, say during the light of a full moon. That way you can have the adventure take place over the course of a single night. Have whatever the Banshee is using to control the hordes of undead fail a the first rays of dawn. That way you can do various wave encounters and village assault things with the party just having to hold out until dawn.
If you want a great example of player encounters vs. an undead horde attacking a town, the following adventure did it rather well:
