The folks in my campaign read these forums and occasionally stumble on my posts, they won't intentionally read them if I hide the question in the spoiler tab so here goes...
So I've been mixing QotDH with LMoP and a bit of home-brew stuff. By the time they started QotDH they were 4th level (currently 5th) Leosin Erlanthar is a monk Harper who is captured by Rezmir beaten and tortured. The party finds him in the hatchling cave. I thought it would be cool if Rezmir had a blue slaad she controlled and used as a torture device. So when they come across the wounded Leosin, he's been (unknowingly) infected with Chaos Phage by Rezmir and left behind. They will of course try to heal him and take him with them. In a day or so he'll change and it could be a pretty cool encounter where they are stalked by a red slaad. 5 players at 5th level should be able to handle it. My question is how likely is a slaad to be on the material plane. I've looked and see that they exist in Limbo but it doesn't say much about how common they would be anywhere else. Obviously as DM i can do whatever I want I just want to play it close to the rules. If not a slaad I'm open to suggestions of anything that could be a quick shocking moment or like a chestburster type scene from Alien. Thanks
it can be as likely as it needs to be. That's the marvel of random encounters. No matter how unlikely a player is to encounter such-and-such creature, it is never actually impossible. And what isn't impossible, is possible, even if improbable. The probability increases exponentially due to the fact that you have a background story to explain why such a creature would be encountered to begin with. And since they are a parasitic species, once there is already one, the chances of encountering more increases due to the possibility of their spread.
