Recently my party was on a vacation ship and, as expected, ran into a mid-level noble from Waterdeep who was a complete ass, not only to them but to the rest of the passengers and crew. The noble was appopriately disciplined by the ship's captain, but when the guests were departing the ship, the party's rogue managed to sneak off with a piece of the noble's luggage. Honestly, I didn't see that one coming but I had a bit of inspiration. The party is soon coming to the end of the story arc that took them from 1-12th level and I need some more ideas for homebrew, so I had the luggage contain a prized magical rapier that may have INT and be a family heirloom. All the party knows is that the rapier is very nice and has gems in the guard that form the noble's family crest. They have talked of fencing it for the $$.
I would like this to be a possible story hook. I was thinking of them giving it to one of the fences in the guild, only to have it returned nervously. Later on, the noble family will come after them for theft of the rapier. So, my question is, what would make the fence return it?
Some thoughts: Because it has INT and is magical, taking the gems out would be difficult and would lower the value. The rapier controlled the fence and made him return it to the party.
- Noble family has an assassin on payroll and the guild doesn't want the hassle or collateral damage. - There is a curse attached to the rapier that causes everyone who holds it to tell the truth. - There is a rumor of a curse that has been blown out of proportion and the fence isn't brave enough to risk it. - The fence claims it's a forgery. - The fence returns it in order to snitch on the party and collect the reward money/political favor from the Waterdhavian family.
Maybe the noble's family, or at least one member, is actually influential in the thieves' guild. They sell the rapier, but within a few days, some powerful crime boss knows exactly who stole his loudmouth nephew or whatever's sword.

The rapier controlled the fence and made him return it to the party.
Any other ideas?
the fence could recognize the family seal and know the family and therefore know that they aren't part of the family and return it.
Thy're a fence for the Thieves Guild, so I doubt that would be an issue, but that might happen if they try to go outside the guild... thanks!
