I'm running a campaign where the players may meet Gromph Baenre, maybe in a hostile fashion. What stats should I use to represent him? Archmage seemed like a safe bet, but they represent a 17th level wizard while Gromph seems like someone on the level of Elminster. Should I just play him up as basically a demigod and intimidate the players into not attacking? Please help!
I can’t believe nobody replied to this post? I am sure you have long since decided what to do… Gromph is most certainly a 20th level archmage, and he has slight psionic abilities as well that enhance his spell-casting. You are pretty close to spot on with a demi-god-like status. I’d be curious to know what you did, as I am running a campaign where my players will encounter Gromph.

Based on the events of Out of the Abyss, Gromph is most likely dead at present.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Death is a mere inconvenience for a mage of this caliber
I see some that are behind on their Salvatore novels.
