Thanks for reading. So, during an encounter with the party, I would like my BBEG to go to a certain character and rip off an amulet from the player character. How do you do this mechanically in the game? To hit roll? Sleight of hand roll? Both?? Is it even possible? It would make the story line great, introduces the BBEG to them the first time, they can guage his power. But after taking this item, he will leave.
I really just do not want to 'do it'. I would like to give the player and/or party a chance of prevention even a small one.
Sleight of Hand alone should work out of combat. Set the DC based on how difficult you make it. Amulets are relatively easy.
In combat, I would require a grapple first. Once you have grappled the victim, I would probably require a second grapple check with disadvantage (unless you had help, then it would be a normal check) while your victim would ALWAYS have advantage, no matter what.
However you do it, be prepared for your players to want to be able to do the same thing. Enemy wearing a magic item, yoink. And if you really need this to happen or the story falls apart, don’t put it behind rolls, dice can and will fail you.
All that said, besides Mog’s ideas, I might do it with something like Hold Person, then take it off the held person. Or suggestion “Hey, that’s a really nice amulet, can I look at it for a second?”
There are a lot of ways to do this during combat. In addition to what has already been suggested, look at the web, entangle, and Evard's black tentacles spells. Or if you really want to show off your villain's long-term planning skills combine web or entangle with a glyph of warding.
There are also quite a few monstrosities and beasts capable of causing the restrained condition just by attacking: Roper, Giant Octopus, Constrictor Snake, Crocodile, Chain Devil (a fiend), Giant Crab, etc.
Oh, very thematic, Dominate person on to him. Walks across the room full of battle ignoring those around, approaches the target, smiles, laughs and says, I told you this was mine, grabs amulet, looks across the room at another party member, and holds up the amulet to him, and says " say good-bye to your daddy" and then disappears.
