Been trying to find anything on the silver swords of githyanki outside of Tome of Foes. Specifically the pricing. I am putting one into a formorians treasure trove. But if my players decide to sell it, I want to know the price of it.
I think its effectively priceless. They are so rare, and pretty much never appear on the open market. And if it ever was for sale, you'd have a githyaki strike team on you pretty quick. So, to answer the question, I doubt the PCs would really be able to find a buyer for it, knowing the buyer would be putting themselves in mortal danger just by owning the thing. In some ways, the sale price could range from, I'll give it to you for free if you take it off my hands so theses gith stop coming after me. Or it could be 10s of thousands of GP to a properly motivated buyer, like someone that has some astral cords to sever.
If you put it in a treasure trove, it's really more of a plot device to introduce some githyanki than it is a piece of treasure.
Yeah, it's pretty fairly implied in the Tome of Foes that the Githyanki's lich queen knows where all her knights, including the fallen ones, swords are. I don't see a Githyanki sword being something in a treasure hoard unless the Formorian is really resourcesful and the lair is littered with other Githyanki knights who also have the sword. There are other magic greatswords more likely found in a treasure hoard.

The Silver Sword is a magical +3 Greatsword which deals an extra 1d6 psychic damage on a hit. I'd say that rounds out to the Very Rare magic item value. Although items that hard to come by are rarely seen on the market anywhere other than interplanar hubs of magic (such as Sigil and the City of Brass), their value in gold is between 5,000 and 50,000 GP according to a table on page 135 of the Dungeon Master's Guide.

Panda-wat (I hate my username) is somehow convinced that he is objectively right about everything D&D related even though he obviously is not. Considering that, he'd probably make a great D&D youtuber.

Weapon (greatsword), legendary (requires attunement by a creature that has psionic ability)
This magic weapon grants a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it. While you hold the sword, you have advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws, you are immune to being charmed, and you have resistance to psychic damage. In addition, if you score a critical hit with it against a creature’s astral body, you can cut the silvery cord that tethers the target to its material body, instead of dealing damage. Proficiency with a greatsword allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
I know I'm a little late to the convo but thought I would throw this in for those looking for Githyanki themed weapons. It is the item in an upcoming module PO-BK-1-08 Dark Side of the Rune for my Adventures League group

Weapon (greatsword), very rare
powerful githyanki warriors carry these impressive weapons, which are typically + 1 silvered great swords the weapon looks much like a standard weapon while still in its sheath. when drawn the silver sword transforms into a column of silvery liquid alternating the weapons balance as it flows and shimmers. a githyanki silver sword has the extra quality of reaching into the minds of others when you hit with the sword the target must make a dc 18 con save or loose any mental or magical abilities for 1 d4 rounds. if you are on the astral plane and someone has an astral cord you can hit it or the target the cord has ac 14+the owners Wis mod and ac 20 + Wis mod x 2 when the cord is hit the owner must make a dc 13 con save or be returned to his physical body. if the cord is destroyed the owner dies instantly.
Proficiency with a Greatsword allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.
Graze. If your attack roll with this weapon misses a creature, you can deal damage to that creature equal to the ability modifier you used to make the attack roll. This damage is the same type dealt by the weapon, and the damage can be increased only by increasing the ability modifier.

Part of my thought was to have it be a plot thread. But wanting to be at least somewhat prepared for a few different paths my players go.

See post #2 for why it will remain a plot point - nobody is going to buy it so the party are stuck with it ;-)
