Currrently, we have a Warforged Eldritch-Knight fighter. He is a great-sword swinging tank, but at ranged combat he was pretty terrible.
So, I created a greatsword named "Farscythe". It's magic with respect to what can be hit with it, and it sheds bright light for 20' and dim light for another 20' on command. Outside that, the only other property it has is the 'thrown' property with a range of 10/20/30.
I wouldn't say it's game breaking but it certainly adds some flare to his character especially when combined with the EK ability to have a weapon return.
Certainly not the most powerful thing I've ever thrown into a game before, but fit the character it was designed for and helped him out in a pinch with some ranged weapon capabilities.
