I've been facing this dilemma recently since I've been thinking about running my own campaign. As a DM, do you put out a call for players or handpick them yourself? What I basically mean is places like r/LFG and the D&D Discord server allow DMs to look for players and vice versa. As a DM, would you post a Looking For Players or go through "DM wanted" posts to find good candidates?
One pro I can think of doing it the latter way is you get more say in what sort of players you get when you handpick them. You can have them all from the same timezone whereas people from an LFP post may have conflicting ones. Age applies for that argument as well. What's your say?
I've done both, with far better success recruiting players via LFP posts. I always vet them before I extend an invite, though, which involves a few rounds of mutual Q&A in private messages to check compatibility with play styles and expectations. It isn't completely foolproof, but it helps a lot.
Time zones are the bane of my existence, ngl. My first campaign, I had players on four continents and it was a miracle finding a time that worked for everyone. My next campaign was a lot more manageable with just two continents represented, lol.
