Recently I started playing Danger at Dunwater as DM. On the road from Saltmarsh to Dunwater River, the party was attacked by bullywugs as they decided to go to the river by land. At this ambush, I made a bullywug croaker cast Rooooo-glog and gave 10 hit points to thebullywugs around the croaker, without himself. However, the players seemed to think that the spell worked for the croaker, too.
So, my question is: Does Rooooo-glog that a bullywug croaker casts give 10 temporary hit points to the bullywug croaker himself?
In my opinion, it doesn't seem to work for the croaker because when the spell description describes Bullywug Croaker, it says the croaker, not bullywug.
I would say that the Rooo-glog ability would apply equally to all bullywugs within 30' including the croaker. Here is the relevant text.
"Some bullywugs are born with the ability to weave magic into their songs. These rare specimens are raised in protected enclaves where they are taught to use their magic to both heal and harm."
A bullywug croaker is just another bullywug with some special training and abilities based on the text in the book.
"Rooooo -glog (1/Day) . The croaker sings an ode to an elder froghemoth. Each bullywug within 30 feet of the croaker that can hear the song gains 10 temporary hit points."
The croaker IS a bullywug within 30' of the song so, in my opinion, it should benefit from the magic of its own song. In addition, since it is a 1/day usage, I can't see the 10hps in question being a balance issue so I'd definitely give the benefit to the bullywug croaker along with any other bullywugs (including a bullywug royal) that are within range.
To be honest, I think the croaker would have likely gathered all the bullywugs going into the battle together before hand to provide the benefits of the song since there is no time limit on the temporary hit points.
