Hi. I’m a fairly new DM. I came up with a one off side quest for my adventurers in a “Dreamscape”.
here is the outline:
1. Each character wakes up inside their own dream (but they don’t know they’re dreaming yet) they need to figure out what’s going on, where their companions are and where they are.
(this is where they need to roleplay individually with me, their DM)
2. The DM leads each player separately through their paths in the dreams scape where they gradual understand they must be dreaming - quiet beautiful areas start changing forms and become more sinister. 3. each player had to face their own individual fears. 4. Once each player has faced their fears, a path will appear into a glade where they will find their companions, each coming out of a different path.
from here on I can DM them as a team. Before this I don’t want them to know whad the others are going through.
Any ideas on how I can DM this beginning part without each player getting bored while I work with others? The logistics are frustrating me, but I honestly think the quest will be fun once I’ve figured out the best way to DM it without boring the players
one idea was to have the scenario introductions written out and handed to each player at the table. Then they can write down what they do and hand it back to me, then I can give them the next step? But how do you think this would play out? I want it to be as engrossing and entertaining for the players as possible. I don’t care how hard it will be for me, I can think on the fly pretty well.
One on one I think is way better than writing things out. I'm guessing by that you're in person, which definitely complicated things.
What I would do as a virtual dm, is let the group know the week before (assuming a weekly schedule) that next session would be different. At normal time, I would call one player at a time, so the other players can occupy themselves until then. As long as you make it clear the expectation is for them to be ready to play. Then once everyone is done, they meet up as a party. If too long had passed and it's too late, say you'll continue next week. Make sure they know this is a possibility, don't want disappointment.
In the case of in person, I would give the advice to make it for this one time virtual. It makes this all way easier. Alternatively, you can bring them into a different room, but like you said, they may get bored.
If you want to do the ultimate strat, have another player run a one shot for the session, or set up a games console for all of them. Kill two birds with one stone, but I get that's quite a bit over the top.
