One of my players requested to get a Rapier of Warning from one of the merchants. Instead of just allowing them to get the weapon, I allowed them to buy a +1 Rapier but told them if they could collect the necessary materials for an enchantment of Warning, he would enchant the +1 Rapier with the proper spell for a discounted price. I did this to allow them the option of a side quest to collect the desired ingredients. Here's my dilemma, what would be reasonable materials to send them to collect that would be consistent with the results of Warding enchantment? Just so everyone understands, my player said she was perfectly fine with just a +1 Rapier but when my merchant made the offer to enchant the sword, the entire group got excited for the side quest so it wasn't a punishment for the group.
ok so i'm not sure if you're asking about a "warning" or "warding" enchantment. if they need to gather materials, here are some suggestions for both
1. if you meant warning, i would recommend either something like a magical bell flower that can actually ring, and would warn the party of danger, or the eye of a magical creature able to see the future in a limited capacity. maybe both.
2. for warding, i would recommend drawing inspiration from spell components used in protective spells. maybe a holy tablet (inspired by shield of faith), water from a specific spring (armor of agathis), hide of a magical creature (mage armor), blessed water to quench the blade (prot from good and evil). you could flavor the ward based on the spell its based on 2
hopefully one of the suggestions can inspire you. good luck!
