So, I am running a campaign, where there is a singular god, killing off other gods, and taking their portfolios for himself, at the end, he is going to be the last god left.
How can I let the players in on this? I've dropped a few hints... paladins and clerics at temples throughout the world have had their powers stop working. (I have also, a paladin and a cleric in the party too...) What is a good way to get them on this plot hook?
Well, that' depends on any number of factors. How do you get any group of characters interested in any given plot? That depends on the characters in question. You have a mentor that's affected. You're hired as a mercenary to do something. You've been brainwashed by mind flayers. You're a cleric, paladin, or warlock and basically ordered by your god/patron/master to do something about it.
How is the evil god going about it? When you get right down to it, the god of Goblin-kind basically does the whole conquer other gods thing. He conquered the original goblin, hobgoblin and bugbear pantheons and consumed them into his own pantheon army, and is now attempting to do the same with the orcs. This generally takes the form of goblinoid armies marching over people and force-converting them to their faith. Do that often enough, and you basically eat the other god. So, an army of darkness to keep from kill your loved ones tends to be a very good motivator.
The key to any plot involvement is to make it personal.
