So I'm running the Curse of Strahd right now, which contains werewolves. However, the PC lycanthropy rules in 5.5e are awful, so I'm not sure how to handle if a player gets cursed. Any suggestions?
I really like the way Grim Hollow does transformations like this. It scales as the character levels/progresses to different stages of the disease/condition. I'm using for a character who got bit by a vampire and they're having a great time with it.

Well, depends on the effect you want. A typical horror movie implementation is:
Make the roll for the player, and don't tell them if they fail.
After some delay, PC wakes up in the morning covered with blood, and doesn't remember why.
If not dealt with, this escalates to them turning into a werewolf in the middle of the night and trying to kill the rest of the party.
It's possible that something else can trigger the transformation. For example, Strahd might charm the PC and tell them to 'reveal your true self' or some such.

Grim Hollow is good, but personally I think the Lycanthrope one might be one of the overall weaker ones. (I love the Vampire one too though). Also, I'm running the popular homebrew of werebeasts having Regen, so I'm not sure how that would fit with those rules.
A. I'd have the curing get more difficult with higher levels, as the curse sets in (raising the DC by one per level or something).
B. Don't let them know overtly they have it. Drop clues, hints, and let them figure it out.
C. Maybe give them limited regeneration (a hit point a minute or something), but only after they've feasted on someone else.

He doesn't have much besides the skin on his bones. Me: I'll take the skin on his bones, then.
"You see a gigantic, monstrous praying mantis burst from out of the ground. It sprays a stream of acid from it's mouth at one soldier, dissolving him instantly, then it turns and chomps another soldier in half with it's- "
I have a campaign where 2 of the characters are vampires, and they just gain more features from the stat block as they level up, both the good and the bad. You could also privately tell them what their character is experiencing and let them decide if they want to tell the rest of the party or not.
