Yes. You need to figure out an item's properties to learn what it does. However, if you use the weapon in combat before learning what it does, your DM might describe that the weapon seems to guide itself toward your foe's weak spots, giving you a bit of a clue as to what it does.
I would say that since +2 weapons don't reuire attunement, the only way to tell would be magic, and you can't rest on it to figure out what it is.

He doesn't have much besides the skin on his bones. Me: I'll take the skin on his bones, then.

This is fine as a house rule, but it's worth pointing out that this is contrary to what the official rules actually say about this.
What do they say? Where? 🙈
The Player's Handbook describes how you can learn how a magic item works in chapter 6 under the section "Magic Items". One method described is casting Identify on it. Another is focusing on it while in physical contact with it for the duration of a Short Rest.
My point is that the latter method works for any magic item, including those that don't require attunement.

Hi there, Midgardians!
So imagine I get a magic weapon that it is a +2. Do I need to use Identify/spend a rest in order to know that that weapon has a +2?
Thanks in advance.
