In their travels my party is going to find a group of trappers and hunters stationed outside a forest, unable to go inside. The forest is diseased, and dieing. I'm planning on swarms of ravens, diseased dire animals, and blights, lots of blights.
But I am trying to think of a good CAUSE for this, I could loosely have it related to a black dragon they are familiar with. Or should I use a fey, fiend? Any input on the cause could be or maybe some outside of the box ways of dealing with the diseased forest would be appreciated.
OH! I have almost the exact same thing using two different mechanics!
Mechanic 1: An aspiring priestess of Vecna is trying to gain favor and power. To do so she's decided to fashion relics in the name of Vecna, unwittingly she discarded what she thought was a worthless attempt. This relic seeped into the ground, deep in to the underground water flow where it poisoned it with the evil contained inside it. The guardian of the forest, a Dryad, has been corrupted by this evil and it has extended outward from her tree and has affected the entire forest.
Mechanic 2: A demon, trapped in a magical urn, has been released by an unsuspecting boy. The demon has possessed the boy, granting the boy powers to control undead, and the boy returned home. Slowly the demon's power grew in the vessel, the boy turned into a King of Undeath in his realm, usurping the power of the city he resided in, and slowly turning the populace into undead. This expansion of power has affected the entire realm that he reigns over, the forest, the lakes, the entire ecosystem. (Think Yellowstone National Park turned into an undead haven of sulfer, disease, and the likes)
I'm gonna sprinkly some DM fiat on Mechanic 1 and use that, since Vecna is still a major player in the campaign I'm gonna have a since disgraced Baron on the run from the crown attempt what your priestess did, which will set up that whole plot of the Baron trying to become a Lich under Vecna after they finish their current quest.
Glad you liked it, and yea a Kitsune would definately make the players worry more.
I built the Dryad bit as a introduction to her when they were lvl 2-ish, but they never did help her with the evil artifact (they thought what they found was it and moved on)...they're lvl 6 and half-way across the continent...I can't wait for the reveal when they head back to talk to her.
my main thoughts on this one, (probably too late) my main question would be why vecna and not jubilex or one of the corruption based deities, it's a prime candidate for corruption based deity cult effects, it's always worth having a god available in world for oozes, slimes, corruption and decay.
no worries here comes your NE jubilex worshipping group of druids in the forest unleashing corruption and blight on everything. you could even have them be corrupted worshippers of some other god who need returning to sanity so the task then becomes not one of killing the druids to stop it, but capturing them for healing so they can set things right and heal the Forrest. for that one you need an artifact which can turn people into evil worshippers of your god of corruption, side quest capture and destroy the artifact.

All plans turn into, run into the room waving a sword and see what happens from there, once the first die gets rolled
I can use that down the road captaincarrot. My party is in a spot where they will have a series of one offs en route to their main goal, so I will need lots of things. They have already killed a coven, and ran into two driders stealing townsfolk. We are in the 'filler episodes' of the season lol

Good stuff.
oooo I might use a kitsune instead of a Dryad, pack more of a punch for the fight.
