My players are about to go to the funeral for an infamous hag that was slain. They're only going because the party wizard owes a hag from their backstory, who taught her how to cast spells. I remember briefly reading something about hag funerals in Volo's Guide, but I don't have the book with me right now. What are some strange, icky, creepy, bizarre, or downright scary things the party will encounter as the only non-hags surrounded by celebrating covens?
Try doing a kinda Norse style funeral and including Volo's guide stuff as well as stuff from the curse of strahd, tomb of Annihilation and more this way you get this creepy, eerie vibe that makes the players fear what might happen
I’d imagine a hags funeral to be a very private affair. You should make them go into the woods late at night and look for the funeral. They can get into some scraps with some creatures that go bump in the night while looking for the location. You could lead them in the right direction by dropping hints, like “you hear the sounds of callous laughter coming from this direction” and you see pale lights over here”... but when they finally get to the area that the funeral is at.. there should be no one.. no sounds.. and no light. It should be magically pitch black and silent. Have the party investigate and find either a door in a tree to a pocket dimension where the funeral is taking place... or a haversack they have to climb into. When they finally do get to the funeral it should be like wicker man. Pitch black with a great funeral fire providing the only light. The light should cast an errie glow on decrepit faces, some hags might even be wearing death masks made of forest debris and unknown dead things, while others may be stark naked. The smoke should choke the PCs eyes and the smell of sweat, decay, and rot should fill the air. I imagine a cauldron would be bubbling full of slimey eel parts and entrails of long dead animals. A sacrifice will likely be required to honor the dead hag... nows a good time to test the morality of your PCs..
