I'm looking to build my next D&D campaign. I have my own Homebrew world: The World of Rodinia. I am seriously thinking of buying SKT as the basis for my next campaign. But I'm curious if it would transpose into another non-Realms world very well? Has anyone done this? How did it go? Any threads or blogs on this idea anywhere (I've looked and haven't found any yet)?
I'm more than happy to run SKT in the Realms, but would prefer to run it in Rodinia if feasible without utter carnage or insane amounts of work.
There will be work needed. How much, I can only guess at so I'm not going to do that.
In the past, when I've integrated some outside product into one of my homebrews, it was never with a product I didn't already have. My point is that it may not be reasonable to make that call before you buy. For example, back in the day, I integrated things like Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh (U1), Danger at Dunwater (U2), Ravenloft (I6 - TSR 9075), and others. Those stories fit my world not just because they were small in scope but also because of the tone of the stories, it matched (or was close to) my world's tone. I didn't use something like Expedition to the Barrier Peaks (S3) or Dungeonland (EX1) because the tone was wrong. I could make that determination only because I had already purchased them. Making the decision blind would be impossible for me. You have the understanding of your world so, really, only you can evaluate if an outside product will fit in it.
Yes, I've done conversions and it went well, often really well. I'd do it again. I encourage others to do it too. All that said, I can't tell you how much work it would take for your conversion of SKT to your world. If the price isn't an issue and you are ok playing it in the Realms then get it and see for yourself.
