I may be doing this wrong or making it over-complicated but I'm about to start my first campaign as a DM. I've done two one-shots and for them I'd actually make the NPC's because players are more likely to get wild and go murder hobo during one-shots.
But now I've run into an issue. Usually, I'd bring up the NPC's stats and roll to see if they saw through a lie or were charmed or intimidated. But now that I have whole towns the characters will pass through I can't create every single NPC.
Is there a way to find NPC's based on race/class or occupation? For instance, if I needed a dwarven druid is there a place where I could search for them or easily find them? What if I need to find a human groomsman is there a place to find that?
I've tried searching on here but anytime I include a race things get kind of lost because it brings up anything that mentions humans or elves or dwarves.

In the back of the Monster Manual (and other books) there are stat blocks for different types of NPC's. Just use them and choose the details like race, looks etc. on the fly. Then you'll have one or two stat blocks for a whole city. There are different ones for commoner, nobles, guards and so forth. There is no need to complicate things you could improvise with little to no effort. A list of names could also serve the purpose.
More important NPC's who the players get to know more deeply needs a bit more work.
However, there is a place you can have pulled up to generate a dwarf druid on the fly and it’ll give you stats and personality quirks and stuff for them. But if you just keep a list of names ready to go, that’ll cover most NPCs most of the time. Commoner, or one of the other Monster Manual NPC stats will cover most others.

Thank you for your help!
“Commoner” will cover most non specialized NPCs

Awesome! Thank you. I haven't thought to check the back of the DM's handbook yet. I bet it has it too.
This is extremely helpful!
during session 0, don't lead with this, or mention it even, maybe. Keep the illusion going that DM is almighty god.
