I'm running HotDQ right now and am going to waylay my PCs with a side quest on the route north from Baldur's Gate that is going to see them infiltrating the ruins of Dragonspear Castle. What little lore I could find about the castle says that Born took over the castle and was subsequently sealed in the castles dungeon basement. It doesn't name what kind of creature he is or anything like that. I was thinking fiend since he runs around with undead. But I'm not sure.
The party is level 5 at the moment and it feels like it should kind of be a bit of a chellenging fight. This group has a tendency to find their way straight to the boss fight without going through the rest of the dungeon first so I want the encounter to be at least medium or hard. Hard would be ideal because if they don't go through the entire dungeon first, they'd be coming totally fresh to the fight.
Does fiend make the most sense? Or should Born be an undead? Necromancer? I'm really new to DMing so any advice would be appreciated. You all did so great helping me out with the DC setting question so I know this is the right group to come to.
Depending on the challenge and the circumstances of who Born is that you want to fill in, you could have him by any number of things. As examples:
He could actually be an Adult Oblex that has been killing adventurers who delve into the castles ruins for a long time now and raising what is left after he is finished with them as undead.
He could have been a real person who succumbed to undeath along with his minions after he was sealed away, becoming an Allip, Revenant, or a Wraith.
He could be a Night Hag who has chosen to lair in the depths of the ruins and is only "sealed away" insofar as there is an item he wants that is locked behind a vault he has thus far been unable to enter do to magic wards.
He could have sold his soul to a Lord of the Nine Hells, becoming an eternal Tanarukk in exchange in order to take Dragonspear Castle. However, the ploy worked too well and the castle collapsed over him, sealing him away.

I really like the night hag idea. You are my favorite person right now. Thank you!
